Midsouth had Federal large pistol primers in stock 30 minutes ago. Not real cheap but they had them.

Very good Jimmy. It's sad and it's funny but it's also very true.
Wait, wait, I will fix that for you...

Primers are out there , but you have to hunt for them . Prices are running 7.5 cents a piece & up , plus hazmat , plus shipping , plus tax . If one simply must have an exact brand / size it's more . FWIW local Cowboy & Action Pistol guys have been using the Serbian made Ginex primers & the Fiocchi primers . FWIW My PPC gun will pop the Fiocchi SP . Cut n dried you gotta get 'em shipped .

I have used Fiocchi primers and IMO they are very high quality. Heck, they use them exclusively in all their ammo production plants. I would, and have used them without any problems what so ever.

The problem is, someone else will not walk by so the store has no reason to drop the prices.

The local Cabelas finally got some in - lg pistol, sm pistol, magnums, etc. Sm pistols were gone in a day. Still had some lg pistols the day after. Haven't checked again. $89 a brick/$8.99 for 100.

ammoseek
ammoseek.com can search multiple vendors for in-stock primers, powder, etc. It sorts them by price. Finer points like free shipping you'll have to adjust for yourself.
I used them to locate some Unis Ginex SP primers, and so far these primers have been entirely satisfactory.

Some improvement in availability and price showing.
The Kingman AZ show this weekend saw a dealer with half a table of new-production SPPs at $90/brick (he claims to have paid $85).
End of the day he has sold perhaps 10 boxes.
Does my heart good to see $90/brick primers just sitting on a table.
Another vendor at the show is still dreaming at $150/brick.

I can tell you where they are NOT at ... Powder Valley Inc.
I clicked on primers and they showed hundreds of brands , rifle , pistol , shot gun , pages of primers ... every one marked ... out of stock !
So I clicked on available primers ... what came up ....
CCI - 50 cal. Browning Machine Gun - 500/ct.- $395.00 !!!
And that was all they had .
I've been reloading since 1967 and have never seen such a wide-spread drought of primers .
2012 was bad but you could find primers on line ... I find nothing at 7 different local gun and reloading stores in my area ... I like to buy local to avoid shipping and hazemat fees ,,, but there is nothing out there .

The fact that loaded current production center fire ammo is now showing up and staying on store shelves gives me hope that the same will happen for primers within the next 12 months.
But until it happens.... choices are limited.

Natchez has had them the last several days. Kygunco has had them inthe past several weeks. Targetsports has had them frequently in the last month or so. They are out there. Expensive? Yes. A requirement to reload a metallic cartridge? Yes.
Been to the grocery store lately? Gas station? Out to eat? Tried to buy any kind of vehicle or truck?

As far as I am concerned, primers are gone. Haven’t seen one primer in the three local shops near me since 2020. We will never see anything less than $75 a brick in any abundance ever again. I got into reloading 25 years too late.

Target is selling them for $120/K if you buy 5,000!
That price is high even for today's world.

One of the usual suspects has CCI SPM and Remington 7 1/2 primers presently.
Pricey as usual too.

do you know anything about Federal Primer Shop in MN or Gun Valley in Ne?
They show primers a bit cheaper but you have to pay via Zelle or Venmo.

That particular venue has been addressed in a separate thread.
1. Scam
2. Scam
3. Scam.
Anyone with primers “ quite a bit cheaper”, is a scam. Pay via Zelle or Venmo, is a scam. No physical address to check out is a scam.
Lotsa people losing money these days. Natchez has had them. Midway, Targetsports also. None are quite a bit cheaper.

Roam the wastelands in search of gas ... or primers.
Box stores have an edge it seems.
Cabelas had small rifle match and small rifle magnum last I was there.
Bass Pro had two flavors of large pistol.
Mom and pops dont bother to compete with them in my area.
The industry seems to be trying harder than they did in the past.

It’s 27 months into this drought. Factory ammo is available again. They can’t use the excuse it’s going to factory ammo anymore. The big box stores get some in and that’s it. The three local shops near me, that used to supply my primers exclusively, haven’t had any in at all, and I mean zero, since April of 2020. I don’t see them coming back anytime soon, if ever.

BLAME VISTA OUTDOOR!!!
I have been blaming Vista Outdoor, the parent company that owns and runs three of the four domestic primer manufacturers: CCI, Remington, and Federal, (amongst other shooting related brands).
They have been complicit in the on/off ammo and other shooting related shortages for probably five years. They took a lot of heat from customers over the dearth of common caliber ammo a year or more back.
But, what is really note worthy is their stock value. What an awful and risky investment! Roller coaster prices from over $50/share to a low of just above $10/share. When things are bad for gun owners, they're great for Vista stock holders, and vice versa. But from mid January to mid July of this year the stock fell by half from just over $51 to about $26, a near 50% loss! If they're going to try to keep their stock holders happy while trying to sell "bargain" priced 9mm ammo, then they're going to have to make up the difference by screwing over customers on things like primers. It's a stupid practice, in my opinion, because reloaders are the "long term" part of the shooting/outdoor market. Mess with your loyal long term customers and you're asking for fiscal volatility.
Anyhow, that's just my theory watching the Vista Board of Directors "clown show" of the past 4 or 5 years....

I bought a couple thousand at $130 per...some guys said I was nuts, but I have the primers....and reloading is still way cheaper than new, especially since I have plenty of casings.

Yep, it's a sad state of affairs, but if you need primers, you have to pay a premium these days.

Brownells has small pistol, small rifle, large pistol, large rifle and shotshell in stock. They have had a decent selection for a week or more. Once this becomes the norm and people stop buying everything at $100 per thousand prices will fall.
The problem is people have been panic buying everything they can get their hands on for the last 2 years. Stores had to raise prices to $100+ in order to have any quantity in stock for more than 5 minutes.
Capitol Cartridge and Zincpoint websites have LARGE quantities available of foreign primers. You can by cases of 10,000 from Zincpoint.

A question not intended as a criticism... What do you mean by reloaders being the "long term" part of the shooting / outdoor market? Maybe I'm missing something here.
It appears the loading component market for handloaders (not businesses that manufacture ammo) is a very, very small one, just like it always has been. As such, demand from handloaders for components will never be treated as a huge market opportunity for component manufacturers because it isn't.

Stopped by a Big R Store this afternoon. Three or four months ago I was able to walk out with 2 bricks of SRP for about $60 each.
Today, a 1 tray limit at $10+, $13+ if you want Benchrest SRP's.
Nope, they've gone to the darkside.

While I'm pretty well stocked I felt the long term need for another brick of SP primers. Two and a half years ago I thought this would simply be another "short term" drought... Two and a half years later I can see no end in sight and what appears to be a "manipulated" shortage. As above, I recently got my brick of SP primers at the "going" rate. Not waiting any longer as this "shortage" has no end in sight as the world turns as it is. I bought them. I have them. Not worrying nor caring if prices fall. A bird in the hand kind of thinking. Others may wait... I'm good to go now in all sizes of primers until the end...

It is manipulated. Absolutely no doubt about it anymore. I’ve talked to reloaders who have been reloading for half a century and they have never seen this. Yeah, everything is more expensive. But it’s there. Primers are not, unless you have a big box store near you. I’m supposed to drive 200 miles round trip to maybe get primers at $85 a brick? If I knew they were there I would make the trip. I can still get anything I want right now, except for primers. I bought a new car this last February. No problem.

It appears the loading component market for handloaders (not businesses that manufacture ammo) is a very, very small one, just like it always has been. As such, demand from handloaders for components will never be treated as a huge market opportunity for component manufacturers because it isn't.

It’s never been a huge market, but it was always a market that was met. The companies that make these, Vista owning three of them I believe, it dribbling out a smaller amount to raise the prices. When this finally calms down, the primers will be available again, at more than double the price.

They are available if you are willing to pay the price. I try to get them with out having to pay haz mat shipping but for folks who are in need bad enough and can pay the price ammoseek has them listed under reloading.
