I know it has been done, I've even read Paco Kelly's stories that he actually likes them better for some loads. I've measured the Winchester small rifle and small pistol primers and they appear to be the same height.

Hi Erv,
I do it all the time. I ran a bunch of bowling pin loads through a model 10 Sat. I had to bump the mainspring up. I had it reduced and the harder primers made me put it back up near stock.
I have used them in any and all things. I doubt that you will notice much difference.
As with any reload you need to aproach the max loads with caution.
If it is what you have or what you can get I'd use them,I have used them a lot.
Good luck
Mike

Your call.

The more intelligent course of action would be to bestir yourself sufficiently to actually TRY looking it up.

Had you actually bothered, you'd have found all this in about 20 seconds - if that long:

It appears to me there was more time spent chastising someone than it took to post the link to the thread.

Put another way, there was FAR more time spent posting a request for readily-found info than the OP spent actually looking. Not hard to do when the latter figure is zero.

He then compounded his error by wasting more time whining than looking.

Those looking to be wet-nursed should go to the La Leche site.

And so you spend even more time chastising than what it took to post the link.

I tend to think the time would have been better spent in educating than chastising, but the tone/choice of words has much to do with how one is received in their attempts to educate.

It may have been time better spent to say, "Rex, there's a button at the top left of this page that says "Find". There's a lot of information on the subject that has already been posted and you can probably locate it with that function. If you have trouble in using the "Find" function, I'd be happy to help you with it."

BTW, I use small rifle primers in the place of small pistol primers and have done so for about 35 years, especially in heavier .357 loads.

I don't think I saw the early posts about this. Good timing for me as I found several hundred small rifle primers in my stash. I'll have to use them in some .357 loads.

Thanks Paul and Erv.

Mike,

Just be aware of lightened mainsprings probably failing to ignite the harder rifle cups. I've never had a problem with factory mainsprings setting them off, but I had one M28 with a lightened mainspring that wouldn't even come close to igniting them.

I've never had good luck with rifle primers in any S&W with a hammer mounted FP. The floating pins have all given me 100% ignition.

A M625-6 is the only frame mounted firing pin model I've ever owned.

One caveat is, I always shoot single action, which probably has a bearing on the situation too.

Come to think of it, that S&W is the only one I have newer than a -2.

Amici:

"It's often not what you say, but how you say it."

While I agree that much of the time people will tend to re-ask a question rather than use the "FIND" feature (what it's called here), IMO that's not a reason to be snarky in a reply, or in this thread, more than one reply. And yes, I could have sent this message privately, but you got snarky publicly. And I'll be the first to admit that everyone has a bad day, so I would appreciate your taking this constructively.

All that said, I do very much appreciate your posting the link to the most recent thread on the subject for the benefit of the OP and others.

Noah

Acknowledged.

May I suggest that a forum consisting solely - or even in large part - of those who contribute nothing but repetitious questions, the answers to which are easily found, is a pretty worthless place to be.

Put another way, would you expect a librarian to not only find a book for an adult supposedly researching an issue, but also to read it to him?

Well, everyone is new at one time or another and if we have any perfect people here who haven't said something out of ignorance or inexperience I haven't met them yet. However, I have seen quite a few that seem to think it's their place to be the internet police without having been asked by Lee to moderate.

I have sent friendly emails to folks who have posted something that, had I posted it, I would have wanted to be gently informed of my error and given correct information without being publicly embarrassed. Though I've only done it a few times most everyone has seemed to appreciate it.

There's a difference in telling someone of an error or the proper way to do something and publicly showing your 'superiority' by beating up on newbies.

Yes, the search function a great tool - for those who know about it and are used to using it. Personally, I learn something new everyday. We're all ignorant about something or other. I was taught there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

Rex, don't be discouraged by the rather poor response given by one member. It is OK to ask questions.

I have had mixed results with small rifle primers in handguns. Some handguns will work fine with them but not all. Your best bet is to try a few in YOUR handgun to see if they work.

Then come back and tell us YOUR results, in your handgun

As you seem to be the one whose delicate sensibilities are so offended, perhaps you should take your own advice.

I find it astounding that such a forum has so little expectation of self-reliance of those posting on it.

There are two reasons to come to a forum.

A. To ask questions.
B. To help answer questions and have discussion on the answers, or in a lesser sense, give the thread direction (drift).

Anything that doesn't fall into the above nicely, goes into bin C.

There is a button at the top of the "posting" window for lack of a better term. If you think a subject has been covered, find the post, copy the URL, and place it in the thread for said question asker to find it- either the straight URL or for posters that are "advanced" in their use of Linkies...
you get the idea.

I can definitely say that I don't know it all, and I know I'm going to ask some more redundant questions.

I think Barney Fife has pretty well summed the situation up, so there's no need in further comment on that.

I also think Amici is right in pointing out some improper responses directed toward him. Anytime one has to use "$" in a word, it's probably a good indication the word itself is objectionable and improper for use in a public forum.

We, as a nation, have become rude, crude and socially unacceptable, which isn't good. However, I feel certain this section, at least, can rise above what the rest of the nation tends to be.

OK, enough's enough. I will not stand for ANYONE calling ANYONE ELSE an anal orifice. Let's show some respect, folks, K?

I had to defend Erv earlier, and I won't stand for folks beating up on Amici, either. He said, "Acknowledged," above, albiet with reservations, and he's entitled to his opinion as is everyone. Earlier, it was just a question of saying the wrong thing to Erv for the right reason, and out of frustration. I am NOT busting on Erv here.

I can understand Amici's point; it can be somewhat frustrating to answer the same questions every two weeks or so. Just go to the 1980-Present Revolver forum and watch how many times per month the subjects of "The Lock" and "MIM" come up, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. But frustration is not an excuse to lose one's bearing, demeanor, or respect for each other.

With repeat questions, it's OK to politely refer the thread starter to recent threads either by posting links or a POLITE reminder that the "FIND" feature can be your friend.

As I said earlier in this thread, the natural tendency is for people to post the question rather than to use the "FIND" / search function. But we try to accomodate everyone, respectfully. As was pointed out above, everyone's a noob at some point about everything. And with the board software migrating from EVE soon, we're ALL going to be noobs with that software.

Erv was directed to the recent thread on the primer subject, where he can get the 411 he seeks. I think it best if we let this dog go to sleep.

Noah
