Following up on Smith Crazy's initial report, I ran some SR 4756 loads over my Chrony this afternoon. I used Independence once fired brass, 180 gr Remington Express JHP, and Wolf SP primers. The OAL was 1.125 and the taper crimp from a Lee FCD was measured at .416. All testing was done with a S&W Model 4043 DAO. The strings with 6.5 and 6.6 grains of SR 4756 measured at 10 feet:

6.5 6.6
Low 900 923
High 936 944
AVG 917 939
ES 35 20
SD 11 10

Felt recoil was less than what I experienced with factory loads. It also appeared milder than previous loads based on Unique powder. As pointed out by SC, the Hodgdon site indicates this powder delivers more velocity with less pressure compared to other powders. I examined the fired cases and saw nothing unusual. Although I was concentrating on NOT shooting my Chrony, the rounds grouped very nicely just below POA. All in all I think this is a very useful load.

I hope this is helpful,

Frank

I don't know how I missed this yesterday. I must be an air-head. Don't respond to that!

Great report Frank. I haven't used this data with any jacketed bullets yet. Mine have all been shot with plated ones. Both Berry's and Ranier's.

My velocity is much nearer 1000fps but just as consistent as yours. I will have to get the load book out and see just what I did get, but your load sounds great!

Did you notice any excessive muzzle flash? When I shot mine it was too bright out to see if there was any. Just a thought.

Remington 180gr Golden Sabres are supposed to develop 1015fps at the muzzle. It would be kind of nice to find out just what they did from our guns.

Good report my friend! Thanks!

Skip, thanks for the kind words.

I did my shooting in bright sunlight so I didn't notice muzzle flash. My outdoor range is now open on Monday evenings so I will make it a point to get out there and check out the flash.

As far as velocity is concerned, I corrected my numbers using the formula in the Remington Shoot application and came up with 963 fps at the muzzle. I'm not sure of how Remington came up with 1,015 but suspect it may have been out of a Universal Receiver with a longer barrel. According to the Hornady 7th edition a load of 6.6 gr of SR4756 pushing a 180 gr HP-XTP should measure 950 fps out of a 4 inch S&W 4006. Assuming similar ballistics with the Remington HP, thats pretty close. According to Hornady, the load can be pushed to 7.0 gr to get velocity of 1,000 fps. I am happy with what I have and not inclined to push this load to the max. Now all I need is to find some more of those 180 gr HP bullets.

I'll keep you posted,

Frank

I find Remington Shoot! to be a very useful free program. For those interested, here's a link to the download page.
