Why am I suddenly getting bullet lube splattered on my targets
A little while back I got a pretty good deal on a quantity of cast 130gr and 147gr bullets. The 130's have a red lube and the 147's have a greenish/blue lube. Firing a few hundred of each over the last couple of months or so I have never seen any lube splattered on my targets (50ft range). Suddenly yesterday I'm seeing it with both lubes. It doesn't look burned or anything. Looks the same as it does on the bullets. My loads are identical to what I've been shooting, the range is the same, and my targets are taped to cardboard so there's no way the bullets are smashing against anything that could cause lube to fly off. Just punching holes in paper. The outside temps aren't much diferent from what it has been. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything but I'm wondering why it should start doing this all of a sudden. It's not a lot but after a 10 round mag there are at least 2 or 3 chunks on the target.

Cleanliness of the bore maybe?

I clean my pistol after each range session so I wouldn't think that would be an issue. The conditions were pretty much identical to every other time I've fired them. There don't seem to be any related problems, it just strikes me as odd.

Sometimes chucks of lube, hardens and just comes off the bullets. Sometime it melts. I had some bullets in the garage for a long time. I took some out to load and the lube was all melted over the bullets. A big sticky mess.
I would not worry about it if the bullets have lube in the groove when you load them.

yeah, I'm not overly worried. Just curious why it would have started.

Harder loobes will tend to cling to the boolit in colder weather , but as warmer weather comes in it`ll sling off .
I try to use a softer loobe so it slings off early in flight & has less affect on boolit flight on longer ranges.

It's not uncommon for bullet lubes to "purge" themselves from the bullet. Softer ones usually do is shortly after leaving the bore. Hard lube could do it at anytime. If accuracy is all you want it to be, I wouldn't worry about it.

Some lubes stick to the bullet, some spin off. I prefer a lube that sticks, seems more predictable. A lube that spins off part of it's lube will become unstaible @ longer ranges, usually more than 50ft. There are soft lubs that are stickie & hard lubes that are stickie. Unfortunately, buying commercial cast, you get what you get.

I agree with everyone here. I just thought it odd that for the first 1000 rounds I never saw any sign of splatter and then it suddenly showed up. Especially since the temps around here haven't changed more than just a few degrees over the course of time I've been shooting these bullets. but since it doesn't appear to be effecting anything it's more a curiosity than anything else.

My guess and it's only a guess is, the bullets are older now and so is the lube. Lube tends to harden over time so I'm guessing the lube isn't burning off as much as it did when the bullets were newer.

Being a measured 50ft from the target I wouldn't think the lube was bing sprayed from the barrel. One thing I did think of though is that I had sat all of my boxes of ammo out on the hood of the car. Even though it wasn't an especialy warm day (probably about 59 or 60 degrees) the lube may have softened up sitting in the sun like that. I usually leave most of the ammo sitting in the car and just bring out one box at a time.

We took a trip one time to a IPSC match and one of my buddies gun bag was sitting in the trunk over the muffler. When we got there he found the lube in his bullets had melted and ran out the front of the case mouths.
