Federal Sm Pistol Primers
what is the skinny on these primers?
availability? back ordered? not available? I want to order 5K for my revolvers, for next year and want to hear what you are being told before I ask when I call to order (soon) thanks in advance |
This is an exact quote from a dealer I talked to this week:
"We haven't seen those in 9 months." |
thanks for the info PeterM
another question if Federal are the softest primers and are unavailable was the next softest primer out there? I will specifically use these for .38 reloads with lighter actions. |
If they are for next year, I'd just order them now and wait in line untill they come in. I'm going to have to do something for next year too. The easiest thing for me to do will be to put an order in thru Cabelas and just wait untill they come in. I'm semi-close to one of their stores so I can just pick them up when they come in. I bought 8 cases of Federal primers at my local shop in 1996, if I asked the same owner for 8 cases now......He might not even laugh!...ps, stick with Federals with your light action Smiths.
|
I sent an e-mail directly to federal, and they said " we expect to see shortages through the end of the year"
|
In my experience, Winchester are next in ease to ignite. CCI are the hardest. Honestly though I have switched to Wolf and they work flawlessly in all of my firearms. If it were me and I was out of Federals, I would take a spent primer and put it under my strain screw, or make another one that is just a tad longer, and make the action just a little stiffer and use whatever I could get a hold of.
It is better to shoot than to sit on the sidelines! ;) |
I have got about 2K+ left in Federal SM pistol and nearing the end of my competition season, so I have plenty for practice this winter.
I just need a supply for next year. My stuff (revos) are not exactly LIGHTTTTTT actions, but just want to make sure I get the best impact so I dont have to spin around again. I may order some Wins to supplement my winter practice and play the waiting game for Federals. thanks for the info |
Where are you able to back order primers? Most places I go to read "Out of stock- No back order".

I plan to try in about a month. Hopefully others can provide some info. |
How is $35 for a 1000 Winchester Small pistol primers?
|
$35 P/1000 for Winchester Small Pistol is the going price I have seen, WHEN you can find any. Most gun show sellers are charging higher.
|
That was the gun show price today.. limit of 2000 per customer
I guess I should have grabbed a carton. |
My local "pusher" just got in some Federal SP at $45/1,000. As to hardness I think Remington falls in between federal and Winchester with CCI the hardest. I am not sure where Wolf fits in but I think they are a touch harder than Federal and not as hard as Winchester.
I hope that helps, Frank |
Patience is a learned virtue - you have to outlast the hoarders! My local supplier is ca 30 miles away so I always purchased 5000 primers at a time and restocked when I go down to a 1000. Now he has a limit of 1000 primers per customer but no price gouging at $29.95/M.
|
Check with your local shops. I've bought about 5000 Federal and 1000 Winchester small pistol from local shops in the last couple of months.
|
They put the Federals behind the counter at the range I go to, so people can't buy them all. I have bought 1000 at a time several times this year when I just happed to be there at the right time, for 37 dollars. I grabbed 1000 just two weeks ago.
|
glad I stocked up
before the rush "hording" started

Standard Vs. Magnum Federal primer
I shoot 686 revolver needing soft primers and have been using Federal standard small primers. I have an opportunity to pick up 5000 Federal small Magnum primers. Is the magnum hardness the same as the standard primer???

small pistol primers - cabelas
hello;
yesterday, purchased 2k magtech small pistol primers at cabelas in gonzales la. $29 + tax. rp |
Ditto, I just bought 6k sp magtech primers from cabelas and have 3k spm primers due in any time now from cabelas!
|
Georgia Arms had Federal small pistol primers my last several visits. They are the same $35/1000 that I see everywhere now.
Good luck... |
I've found Winchester, Federal, and CCI available at local shops in my area (NC). They have generally limited purchase to 1k/day (one place limits to 500/day), so that seems to slow down the hoarding and make them last longer. No real gouging either, as I've been paying $29.95/thousand for SP and LPs.
I recently cancelled a Cabela's backorder, since early April, as I was tired of getting emails telling me that they'd be in within a couple of weeks... I just got more persistent in checking around locally for primers. In my area, if you are pretty regular in visiting the local shops, you will run into decent quantities of primers. |
