I am currently writting a western/adventure novel that takes place in 1886. It started out as a story based on a 44-40 S&W in my collection that has such a low serial number that places it in the timeline of Bell Starr and John Wesley Harden. Outlaws and lawmen have decorated their firearms since the beginnings of firearms history. I agree with my fellow forum members, to make your story belivable you need to experience the feel and recoil of your protagonist/antagonist. It will better help you discribe a true sounding event. Best wishes in your writing venture.
