Hi Drifter, The .32 S&W Safety Hammerless, "New Departure" was introduced in 1888 and was manufactured until circa 1937 with some 242000 being produced. In 1900 a manufacturing change took place at approximately sn 91500. Collectors call these original design revolvers the "First Model" (S&W nomenclature doesn't differenciate between designs). Ergo, "most" early .32s are antique and no FFL/CR is required. My lettered .32 lemon squeezer is sn 283xx and was shipped in January, 1891. Give the guys on this Forum a hint at your serial number and, I'm sure, someone will get you a date upon which to base a license/transfer decision.

If my rambling is a little obscure, what I am trying to say that of a total of 242,000+ manufactured, the "First Model" ( a collectors term - not S&W's) was mostly produced prior to January 1, 1899. The design change models (2d &3d models to collectors) were all produced after 1900.

Simply check the characteristics to determine your "model". Aletter from S&W would be definite as to date.

Regards, Ray

Default looking for value and dates

This is my first post on this site and I am looking for information regarding a .32 caliber S&W squeeze handle that has been in my family since 1969. It has black handles and is in excellent condition. The sn is 123XXX and has "32 S & W CTG" engraved on the barrell. All of the engravings are in excellent shape also. Can anyone enlighten me as to maybe when it was manufactured and also the approximate value at this time?

Thank you!

Drifter721,
Safety Hammerless 1st model revolvers were actually manufactured until 1902. Any one made before 1899 is an antique as RayJ stated. Those made after 1888 are Curio and Relic firearms and if shipped across state lines must be shipped by and to someone who has a C&R license or an FFL. Your gun is very close to the cut off date for antique status but should be fine.

RayJ,
Last time you reported your gun on this site, #283xx I recorded the shipping date in my data base as 1/1892. Did I transcribe it wrong? Is it 1/1891 as reported this time? By way of explanation, I record the number and shipping date of every lemonsqueezer that I can find. It goes in a personal data base without the name of the person who owns the gun. It is possible that someone else has a #283xx that was shipped a year later. But more likely I blew it.

mommab,
Your Safety Hammerless is an early 4th model. My data base shows #122xxx as shipping on 4/1904. Yours probably shipped within a few months of that gun. The value depends on a lot of things. If it is one of the common barrel lengths, 3 or 3.5 inches it can be anywhere from $100 in very poor condition to $4 or 500 for near mint. If it is a scarce barrel length or has special order features the value can go way up.

Mark

Hi Mark, I mistyped the date regarding my First Model ND .32 "lemon squeezer".

The letter from Roy says that sn28306, my gun, was shipped on January 1, 1892 to E.K. Tryon Co., Philadelphia, Pa. 3.5" bbl, nickel and black rubber grips. FWIW, Jan 1, 1892 was a Friday. Regards,Ray

Default 1st Series .32 New Departure

I have been given a S&W .32 New Departure first series with serial number 123XX, can you tell me the aproximate date of manufacture and a value range for this weapon? It has the 3" barrell and has a (rather poor) nickle finish. I don't really see any rust and it functoions perfectly, but the finish is warn and there is two small pieces broken on the black grips at the base (only noticable if you turn it upside down). Would it greatly depreciate the value if I had it re-finished and can I purchase a set of date appropriate grips? Thanks

Hello Detheaton,
Your 1st model Safety Hammerless probably left the factory in the fall of 1890. In the condition you describe your gun is worth about $100 to $150. Refinishing it will bring the value up to people who just want to shoot it, like cowboy action shooters, but it won't bring the value up much. You will never make up the cost of refinishing it unless you are able to do the work yourself. 32 Safety grips come up for sale on ebay a couple of times a year, but usually the people selling them don't know what they have, so you have to know the measurements. They typically sell for about $40 to $45 dollars plus shipping. You might also be able to buy them from someone on this sight. Go to the want to buy section at the bottem and put in an add. Be sure to stipulate 32 Safety Hammerless because there are 3 32 caliber top breaks and all use differant sized grips. You can also buy aftermarket grips, but they look like aftermarket grips and are not as desirable to a buyer. The cost of good grips adds about the cost of good grips to the value of the gun. In other words if you pay $45 the value of the gun at least in the condition of yours goes up about $45. But, if or when you want to sell the gun it will sell much better with unbroken grips.

I've got a first model .32 with a S/N of 49,1xx. Going by SCSW 3rd,
I'm interpolating (guessing) about 1895 for shipping. It's in overall
good condition with some nickle loss on the cylinder. Still shoots and
functions well. TACC1

Thanks for all the great info on this thread. I acquired sn 213xxx today. From reading the thread, I'm assuming circa 1935. Condition is same as Detheaton described, but has no grip damage so I'm guessing value of $150-$200. Any corrections appreciated.

Group, For what it's worth, the early .32 Safety Hammerless production records are contained in the Floor Foreman's day books. The guns were made on a "piece rate payment" program, wherein a Floor Foremen kept a record in his Day Book, often by serial number, of the progress of the manufacturing, assembly and completion of each gun that his workers produced each day and they were paid according to how many pieces they made. These books for the Safety hammerless models, from the first guns in the late 1880s to the early 1900s were in a deceased S&WCA members collection and were set to come up for auction a few years ago. The member's heirs and the auction house did not realize the importance of these books to collectors, so with Charlie Pates andRoy Jinks help, I arranged for them to be donated to the CVHM collection of S&W archives, where they are today. Perhaps in the future, the S&W Historical Foundation can arrange to have the books digitized and the information made available to all our members. Perhaps then a factory letter can not only include when a Safety Hammrless model was shipped, but also when it was made and put in the vaults for future orders. Currently the BATF uses the ship date to determine whether a Safety Hammerless model is an antique or C&R, however if a factory record can indicate when a gun's frame was made, that date can become the date by which the BATF detrmines the gun's classification, such as is currently done with the .44DA models. Ed.

ncreb, S&W was never very consistant about putting the logo on their guns, or where they put it when they did put it. No big deal, it's either there somewhere or it isn't. What is rare is a gun with two logos stamped on it, one on each side. Ed.

Welcome o the forum Gillert4u, Catfish2, and lowmoor4me,
First let me say that the only way to positively identify when a gun left the factory is to request a Factory Letter of Authentication ($50) from Roy Jinks the official S&W Historian. If your old Safety Hammerless is a family heirloom or in any way special to you it is well worht the money. I can give you an estimate to probably with in a year or two but the guns were not shipped in perfect numerical order so it is just an estimate.

1gillert you didn't specify if it was 32 or 38 caliber. If 32 it is a 3rd model that probably shipped within a year or so of 1910. If it is a 38 it is a 4th model that shipped around 1904.

Alex, your 32 SH is a first model and shipped right around the last half of 1897 or the first half of 1898. I believe it is considered an antique by the BATF.

Lowmoor4me you also failed to specify 32 or 38 caliber. Your gun shipped around 1895 if it is a 32 and it is a first model. If it is a 38 it is a 3rd model and shipped around 1892.

Default My thanks to the serious collectors here...

My first model is near me now. It is cleaned, lubed, waxed, and loaded. The craftsmen at S&W constructed it so well that it
functions probably as well now, as when it left the factory. I only wish
that my own labors could last so long. Tip of the hat to S&W. TACC1

Default .32 Lemon Squeezer

I have my great-great grandfather's gun. It's a S&W lemon squeezer, nickle-plated with black grips. It has a 3.5" barrel with a serial number reading 59XXX. Can anyone help me date this handgun?

CobyCapers Welcome to the forum. Your gun can not be a S&W Safety Hammerless or lemon squeezer. The serial number range for that model did not go above 260000. Possibly it is an Ivor Johnson as they had a hammerless model that fired either 32 or 38 S & W ammunition. If it is a S&W it should say Smith & Wesson on the top strap of the barrel, or if it is a very short barrel then it will say it on the side of the barrel.

Hello Cntrprk, Welcome to the forum.
With a 3 1/2 inch barrel it would have to be a 32 Safety Hammerless. The only way to know exactly when your gun was shipped would be to send for a factory letter ($50) from Roy Jinks who is the official S&W Historian. An educated guess derived from a data base that I keep would be in the time frame from late 1894 to spring 1895. But that could be off by a year or two as the factory did not ship them in numerical order.

Cflier - would you have an approximate date for a .32 safety hammerless with SN 82xxx? Any chance you know where a new firing pin could be located (I tried Gun Parts Corp but they have none.)

And, slightly off topic for this thread, would you have a date for a .32 model 1 1/2 with SN 85xxx?

Thanks.

Hi Folks, This is a good website regarding old pistols including the S&W's. He has researched the cut off dates for antiques. Enjoy. The Pre-1899 Antique Guns FAQ

Welcome to the forum Folio,
The same advice as above would apply here. If you want an exact date and other shipping info cotact Roy Jinks. My data base would place it within a year one way or the other of 1897. You didn't tell us if your 32 1 1/2 is a rimfire or centerfire. In either case I have no reliable data base for those. Hopefully someone else with a 1 1/2 with a close serial # will jump in here and help.

Default I love this site! Was given a 32 short need help

First off I would like to give props to those of you who are willing to provide knowledge to us. Thank you. I am new to this site and need a bit of help. I was given a 32 short safety revolver. I see cflier records serial numbers and can possibly tell me when mine was produced. I hear they shoot great but dont want to use the wrong ammo. From what i can see the serial number is 99272. Can u please provide some info about my gun. It was my great grandfathers. It is in nearly perfect condition all of the nickel looks really good.

Greetings to all! We have a New Departure 32 with 3 inch barrel. Serial number 121XXX. It is in the original box and in good condition, but a bit of pitting on the nickel on one side. We think it belonged to my husband's great-grandfather. I will be sending for a factory letter, but any info you could provide would be helpful. Not sure whether we are going to keep it or sell it. Thanks in advance.

jerjiggy - I will fill in for Mark, while he takes a well deserved break from this thread. You have a 38 Safety Hammerless Model, or 3rd Model 38 Safety produced from 1890 to 1898 with serial numbers from 42000 to 116000, so all should be considered antiques. You need 38 S&W ammunition and several manufacturers offer this cartridge and it is safe to shoot in your revolver as long as the lockup is good. There is a good indication that your gun has been renickeled, so it does not have it's original finish.

AuntieRuth - you do not have an antique, since your revolver was produced in the early 1900s, probably before 1904. Your gun is called a 32 Safety Hammerless, or 32 Safety Second Model, manufactured from 1902 to 1909. Serial number range was 91,400 to 170,000. This revolver shoots 32 S&W cartridges and they are available from most manufacturers.

Default Please help w/ID

Just received what I think is a .32 Safety Hammerless shipped around 1892? The SN is 444** and only located on the butt and faintly on the inside of the cylinder. 3 1/2" bbl and only other markings are on the top of the barrel where it says "Smith & Wesson" Springfield MA followed by several patent dates. No other markings or ID anywhere! Also, I have not seen any photos of .32's w/white or yellow grips. They have S & W logo.

Am I correct in ID and approximate date shipped? Thank you in advance for any info.

Wink Antique Squeezer?

Hello folks, I've been reviewing the info contained in this forum and have a value question for the 32 cal 3" S&W I picked up from a lady that didn't want any weapons in her home anymore. That being said, the nickel finish is in excellent condition, has sn47xxx, the box looks original except that there isn't any printed material on the inside of the top of the box. Hope I posted this in the correct spot-first one.
I have since been to a Ohio gun show and was told by a collector/vendor that this gun was re-nickeled at the S&W factory and that is why the condition was so good. There is a trademark or emblem next to the ser#on the bottom of the frame that signified the process was done. So, I still don't know what the value is or what the significance of nickel refinishing to an old gun. Good, bad, or status quo.Any info would be appreciated.

Default .32 DA Hammerless Short Barrel

In 1960 while tearing down an old garage in Ohio I found a revolver hidden in a wall. It was covered with rust and after soaking in kerosene for a few days, I was able open the breaktop and remove the cartridges. I cleaned it as best I could but one side is pitted. The 2 inch barrel and cylinder were clean. I have subsequently fired the cartridges that were in it when I found it. The sn is 259205 and has SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA on the side of the barrel and it is a Lemon Squeezer. I know it is not worth much but I am interested in the history of it.

That's a neat way to find an old gun. But it can't be a S&W 32 Safety Hammerless with that serial number. S&W manufactured just under 244000 of them over the course of it's manufacturing run. It does fit in the serial number range of 38 Safety Hammerless revolvers though, and many of the 2 inch 38s were numbered close to that number.

I just inherited one also.Mine has the 2 inch barrel. The only problem with mine is the bluing which is only 40%.Mechanically it is pristine and had only been fired maybe 2 times. The value would have been 600.00 to 700.00 if bluing weren't so bad.As is mine is worth 400.00 dollars.I had to order the rounds for it and they weren't cheap.About 90.00 dollars for 100 rounds.I think mine was made in the early 1920s as my Grand father was Chief of police in Macon GA in the 1920s and this was his backup gun.Don't know if this helps or not.

I have a 32 lemon squeezer with pearl handles s/n 16057 and a star at the end. Anyone know the date of manufacture? Also, no smith and wesson markings except at the top of the barrel. It say Smith and Wesson Springfield MASS USA and then several Patent dates......
