Need help on this .38 S W perfected
I will very much appreciate the analysis the experts could do on this gun I had from my father...it was bought at the begining of the XX century by the Venezuelan Gvmnt. so Iīve been told. Probably, please correct me, lost part of the trade marks because of the nickeling I believe my father had it made. I thought it was an I J because it doesnīt have the side latch for safety. but then the screws in the I J are in the left side of the gun...The only marks Iīve found are at the butt of the grip and behind the barrel latch, in both the number 17860. If u need any other information or pictures I will gladly send it...I'm selling it and want to know the right price for it

This gun looks like some variant of a Perfected Single Shot, that has
the alternate barrel and cylinder, instead of a single-shot barrel. If
that is what this is, it is built on the 38 Perfected Double-Action
frame, according to the book.
What is the caliber of your gun ? I think the gun I describe above
is a .22 caliber, in spite of the frame that it is built on.
Judging from the edges of the side-plate, your gun has been
reblued.
Perhaps Ed Cornett will see this, and help identify it.
Later, Mike Priwer

I took a few more pics...Thanks for the attention given to this riddle...at least itīs been one for me. I focused on the serial numbers, the trigger, the latch, the aim...it doesnīt say Smith & Wesson at all and Iīve red Spaniards made clons of S&W pistols, so it may be possible this one is a fake...what do u think? Another thing, the first number is a 4 so the serial number is 47860

If it is not stamped Smith & Wesson on the top of the barrel (along with a string of patent dates), and there is no logo on the left frame, it may be a copy. The other possibility is that the refinish removed all the stampings, which is difficult but not impossible to do. As Mike said, it appears to be a Perfected-type gun; most of these had a top and side cylinder latch, but yours does not have the latter. Many copies of older S & W top-breaks were made, but I have never seen a copy of this model before.

Hi 6" .38 S W,
It is usually better to start your own thread in a case like this. I created this thread for your gun. You can use the "New Thread" button when you are in a forum area.
I'll also move this thread to the "Antiques" section where Top-Breaks are discussed.
Sorry, but apparently the pics were lost in the move- probably my fault.
Please reattach them.
