Default Model one and one half

I bought this model 1.5 a couple of months ago. I don't know why, it just sorta stuck on me. It's no where near perfect but it's a good example of an early Smith for my collection. I'll probably use it as trading material for something better but since I only have $150 in it, I figure I didn't do too bad.

When I got it, I couldn't get the nearly perfect Pearls off as the screw was rusted tight. I gingerly used some Kroil on it, just putting a half a drop on it, because I didn't know what the Kroil would do to the pearl. I let it soak and it didn't help. I did this several times over several days and finally just gave up and put it away.

Yesterday, I went to the safe, took out the gun and tried the screw driver again. It turned just like it was a new screw. So sitting for a month or more let the Kroil do it's thing I guess.

The best part is, after taking off the pearls and cleaning them up, some scratched in numbers appeared on the backside.

They match the serial number!

Any idea what these pearls might be worth? Probably more than the gun !

No idea on the value of the grips, but that's a neat little gun. I'd be happy to have one like in my collection.

The pearls will probably bring $125 or maybe even the $150 you paid for the gun, if you post them on Ebay ( Or here on the Forum) . Personally , I would keep them with the gun, as they were fitted to that frame and may not exactly fit another gun, which is, of course, why they are numberd to the gun. They were put on the gun oversize and then polished to fit the grip frame, removed and numbered to the gun, and then the frame was sent to plating. When that was completed, the correct grips could be put back on the gun by matching the numbers. Ed.

I bought a box at an auction with no idea what was inside. A couple of months later I opened it and milled through the contents. I found a S&W .32 cal pistol with a tip up barrel and no trigger guard. A little research on the internet found a model 1 and 1/2 to be the closest thing to it with the exception of the fluting on the cylinder. The steel access panel on the left side is missing, but I made a temporary one from phenolic to be used as a pattern at a later date. The statement on the top of the barrel indicate that the patent was issue 3 times in the middle 1800s and the serial number on the butt is 595XX. I would be interested in knowing what year it was made and anything else that may be available, such as the possible value.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Please post some pictures of your 1 1/2. It will help the experts help you.

Fluting on the 1 1/2 began with the New model in 1868. Your SN would put it fairly early in its manufacturing period of 1868 to 1875, if it is a New Model. It should be chambered for .32 rimfire long, five shots with a birdshead grip

If you mean that the revolver was the same as the Model 1 1/2 Second Issue, except that there was no cylinder fluting, you probably have a Second Issue with a First Issue cylinder. There were 1500 "transition" guns made in 1868, but those were in the high 28XXX serial numbers. They had birds-head stocks and a hexagon barrel. Your revolver was made in 1871. Pictures would be a great help, especially the assembly numbers stamped on the front of the cylinder, the barrel frame under the forcing cone, and the inside of the butt frame under the stocks. All numbers should match.

The "Rimfire" Mod 1 1/2's are referred to as Tip Up's, the barrel swings up to enable the cylinder to be removed for loading then replaced. The First Model was a square butt wit an un-fluted cylinder.

The Mod 1 1/2 "Rimfire" 2nd Issue also a Tip Up had a round butt and a fluted cylinder.

The "Center Fire" Model 1 /2's are referred to a the "New Model", and are a "Break Top where the whole front of the revolver tips forward including the barrel and cylinder assembly. This allows the rounds to be inserted from the back and when it is opened an extractor is cammed up which automatically ejects all to the rounds at one time.

This is a 1 1/2 CF, 2nd Issue.

I did not notice that. Cut barrel?? All you need is a parts 1st and 2nd, then put them together and you will have a mis-matched Transitional. No one will notice.

The 4" Mod 1 1/2 first issue (old model) is a one of 200. I just obtained from a fellow forum member a couple weeks ago. My other Mod 1 1/2 first issue (old model) is an unfired 3 1/2" standard model. They are bot all matching numbers. I just sent for a letter on the 4".

Yes, it cleaned up well. I'll keep you posted when Roy returns the letter. I don't expect until probably July.
