I have a qusetion about the S&W Tipup first model .22 3th issue.
This tiny revolver is made between 1868 and 1881.

The thing in Holland is that antique revolvers made before 1870 are free and dont need a permit.
So it would be nice to know wich serial number of this revolver is made before 1870.

I do know that there is an article by Roy Jinks in the SWCA Journal 25th anniversary reprint book 1 page 152-153 where i can find this information.

The problem is. I dont have that book.

Can someone please help me and could he (or she) tell me wich s&w tipup model 3th issue are made before 1870?

Many years ago I did a "guesstamate" on the serial numbers vs. the years produced of a lot of the different S&W's including the Model 1 3rd. issue, it's not Copyrighted Info by me or any one else, only did it to try an help other fellow collectors, not writing a book or anything like that. I would say any Model 1 made with a serial number below 25850 would have been made before 1870. Of course only the factory would know for sure, if you check with the factory please let me know as I always wondered how close my list was.

Thuer, I'm curious. If you have an antique, S&W or otherwise, revolver in Holland that you claim was made before 1870, how would the authorities prove otherwise? Are they going to send $50 to Roy Jinks for a letter? ( Which would only show when it was shipped, not when it was made.) Ed.

That will be the day when they do that. No it dont work that way.

The Dutch gunlaw says all firearms made before 1870 exept canons are free. Also all rifles, pistols made before 1945 and intend and proofed to shoot blackpowder are free to.
So, you can own a Winchester model 1873 or even a 1892 made before
the point that the gun was made fit for nitro powder.

Information source on that point are the date's of manufacture with the serialnumbers. If that source is not availeble then you can use old advertises where it says that the gun is intend for blackpowder.

In the early days firearmsproducents are proud when the produckt they made is fit for nitro so they put that info in the advertisment.

We use old guncatalogue for that information.

Revolvers made before 1945 are free to when they are not .22 and intend for blackpowder. But they has to be all rimfire no centralfire.

So, a Smith and Wesson new model 3 in.44 rf is free. The one in .44 russian is on permit.

This things you could all find in artickle 18 of the Dutch gunlaw.

There a lot of fine antique guns free in Holland. The law isnt that bad.
We work hard to get the old blackpowder centralfiring revolvers such as the Dutch 1873 revolver free. Becouse there is no ammo for it.

But we live in Holland. The majority of the Dutch dont like guns.
We havent got the history of America where the use of firearms build the state.
I hope that i have made the rules in Holland a bit clear. My English isnt that good.
