Default Is This A S&W?

Anyone know if this is a S&W? If not what is it? Any idea what the value would be for insurance purpose? It belongs to a friend of my that has a computer phobia.

Hello,
It looks like you have a S&W No.2 there. Is it not marked on top of the barrel? What is the serial number and how long is the barrel?

It has a 6" barrel with no marking on top. I can't find a serial number anywhere on the pistol but inside the right grip is number 4876. The cylinder has some faint lettering that I can't make out but I can see the number 1860 very faintly on the cylinder.

Compare it to the pictures of Model 2 Armies on Smith and Wesson Model 2 Army Revolver. It looks like a S&W in most of it's features, but it could be a foreign copy. Look carefully at the rear of the barrel below the breech for assembly marks, which would be a letter and a number, or two lettrs ,or two small numers stamped there, Also do the same for the cylinder. If it's a SA&W, you will see those assembly marks and they should match. If the 4876 stamped on the grip frame is the serial numbe, it shouldhave been stamped on the butt, however known Model 2s have been seen with the serial nuber onthe grip frame like your. The back side of the right grip panel should also have the serial number stamped there, if the grips are original. How many grooves does the bore have? It maybe a parts gun made up by a factory workman, for his own personal use, therefore no factory stampings. Regardless of what it is, value is not high - perhaps $600-$700 range. Ed.

Could this be an old refinish where the external markings were polished nearly off? The trigger and hammer appear to be plated also.

I think that this may be the case. Not only does the hammer appear plated but it looks like the sideplate is dished out a little around the screw,
