I have an old gun, a S&W 38 Special, that I could use some help figuring out the Mfg. date. It's a 5 shot, with ejector, chrome/silver w/distinctive black grip, and apparently, old.

I'm guessing 1899, or at least, turn of the last century.
Actually that's not .38 Special caliber but .38 S&W caliber. It's a shorter round.
It appears to be in pretty nice condition. I think the nickel is original and not a refinish.
You'll have to post the serial number to narrow down manufacture date and which issue it is.
Judging by the square back triggerguard I believe it is 1880s or 1890s. Someone else that knows more than I do will be along.
The SN you give puts it past the antique SN aka the gun is post 1898 manufacture since the cutoff is 382022 for your model. This means that it should be transferred if required.
I also think despite the gun not being an antique (usually means a premium) that the value you got is low. Your gun looks nice and if it functions well, I would say its worth $200 to $300.
I know I'd buy yours instantly at $165 because its nice overall.
