Default Model 2 Old Army

I am a newbie to the Forum. I have had some old HE's for a
good while. But, I recently became the owner of a Model 2 "Old
Army". and all I know about it is on pages 70-71 of the S&W
Standard Catalog. SN is 22934 which dates it about 1863. It
has a 6" barrel. For its age, it cleaned up pretty good. Would
like to hear from anyone more familiar with this model than I
am. 336-765-9635

Welcome to the forum. You need to make the acquaintance of Ron Curtis' web site:

Smith and Wesson Model 2 Army Revolver

There's some great stuff there. Model 2s are becoming more valuable as time goes by, and even beat-up and incomplete guns are commanding prices of a few hundred dollars. Complete guns in ordinary condition are several hundred, and good examples can go for well over a thousand.

Feel free to post pics of yours. There is a thread in the Forum Office section of this board that tells you hows to use Photobucket to host images. Or you can just attach to your post images from the hard drive of your computer. For that you use the "Manage Attachments" button further down the message post page.

This is somewhat off the thread here, but I would like the Forum members to know that Ron Curtis has recently suffered a major stoke that has left him hospitalized for the last several weeks and he is paralyzed on the right side ( hemiplegic). That's the bad news, the good news is that with intense therapy Ron is gaining back some movement and has high hopes that he will be able to type and monitor his computer in a few more weeks. Keep Ron in your prayers, and if you come across more Model 2s, click on his website and ad the info to the data base. Ed.

Very sorry to hear about Ron.
BTW, I see icons beside some names - NRA, US Army, etc.
How do you implant these?

Welcome to the forum. Go up to the top of the page and you will see "User CP". Click on that and then open "Edit your details" at the top left, scroll down the page and select your affiliations.

Exactly what information are you looking for?

There's not much written on the No. 2 Old Army. Even Jinks and Neal only have about three paragraphs about them in their book. There is no indepth reference on the No. 2 but there are a few books that you can pick up bits and pieces.

I will say that your production date is more likely 1864 instead of 1863. I have one like yours in the 22000 range that has a presentation inscription dated April 28, 1864, and Jinks and Neal show the serial number range for 1864 as 15860-29358.

Welcome back Ron! I'm new here, though have lurked for some time. I'll be filling out your survey asap.

I have a quick and stupid question regarding the old #2.... what is the rod that projects under the barrel just below center of the cylinder? Mine has a bit of wiggle in it and for the life of me I can't figure out what it's for.

Normalizer:

That rod is for ejecting fired cartridges.

That's kind of what I'd figured but I was sure it had to be something more technical... Thanks!
