Need some help with an old 38
I have an old 38 That was found where I work. From what I can find on this board it is a 38Da. I don't know what the Da stands for but it looks just like one posted in an earlier thread. The serial num. is 21611. The number is on the grip strap and the cylinder. Its in poor to fair shape with a little rust and a cracked plastic grip slab. Any info anyone can give me is greatly appretiated. By the way, I am a state officer and the gun is not stolen, I ran the numbers. Thanks

DA stands for double action, meaning you need not cock the hammer after each shot is fired. Simply pull the trigger and the cylinder will index another round into firing position in front of the bore, the hammer will cock, and the revolver will fire.

If it is stamped Smith & Wesson it is a first model .38 Double Action, probably made in 1880 or '81. There are many very similar US and foreign made copies. Can you post photos?

That's one of the earlier ones because it has the double cylinder stops. Probably made in the 1880s.

Alan, You must have glanced at the number wrong. It is a 2nd model. They only made 4000 first models before switching to the 2nd.
