S&W Double Action Perfected
Picked up this S&W today. I had not seen one of these before thought it was a neat little pistol. Only problem is it had been re-blued earlier. Bought it from a 70 year old lady that said her grandfather carried it. Gun is very tight. All screws are good. Grip has small crack. 2" barrel. Serial number 59173. Also came in a blue box that was for a M&P Square Butt 2".
As I don't collect S&Ws I would like to get an idea of value of pistol. Caliber is 38 S&W.

The barrel has been cut, which ruins the gun for a collector. Too bad - nice gun....
Value is what one would pay for a shooter - maybe $2-300?

I love it. These look so good cut down. I'd love to have one that was already cut like that. I think I'd feel too guilty to cut one myself
Let me know if you decide to sell it or maybe would consider a trade.

How can you tell for sure that barrel is cut down? I know there is no crown on the barrel but wasn't sure if the older guns were all crowned. I am a Ruger MKII and MKI Collector as well as target .22s. If anyone has anything along those lines I would be interested in trading.

The Perfected was not made in this barrel length to my knowledge. As you noted, the barrel does not appear to be crowned. The sight has been remounted, the lettering on the left is in the wrong place, and the patent dates on the top are partly missing.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't give much for it so it turns out okay it isn't original.

Well, whoever modified it sure did a nice job. If the value is not as great as a pristine factory original, and while it may be a "shooter," to me it still has substantial "authenticity" and is a very fine looking handgun.

May not be original, but I would sure pay in the $300 range for it. Neat little period modification, and a usable one at that.
