In my Jinks letter on my model 1 3rd issue Roy states "Early Frame Topstrap Variation"
In pictures I can't really tell how this differs from the later ones. Could someone here tell me or even better post pictures comparing the two?
How many of this variation were made?

The early top strap variation encompasses about the first 10,000. Viewed from the side, look at the 'squared' area just behind the hinge screw. The pin holding the cylinder catch protrudes from that squared boss. From the top, the area is rectangular like the 1st Model, 2nd Issue. Later manufactured 3rd Issue frames were rounded in this area. Mike #283

These early frames show up occasionally. I have seen two very, very, early 1st Model, 3rd Issue frames (birds head stocks) with 'straight' tops on the stocks, the same as the square butt 1st, 2nds. They look strange with the straight top and the bird head round bottom. I don't own one as they were too pricey for me at the time. As before, I can email you a side-by-side photo of your early type and the later 'normal' type if you wish. Mike #283

Mike, thanks a lot but I can tell the difference now. It was obvious after looking at some pictures of the later type frames.
I am a little curious about that other type you mentioned with the different style grip.That is intriguing. I'd like to see one of those.
