Baby Russian?
Just got this one today. My local pusher called me
and told me he had a top break S&W. I've been at
a gun show all weekend and it's the last thing my
wife wanted to hear that i was going to the gun shop.
Please tell me what you think....
The grips are numbered, are they factory pearls?

Question for our experts. Any idea what year S&W started putting medallions on their pearl grips?

The 1900 catalog states that all factory pearls will have the medallion since aftermarket inferior products were being attributed to the factory.
Sooooooo the latest the factory medallions started was 1900. Could have been earlier but my next earliest catalog is 1887.

Wow, nice snag. I would love to have one in that kind of condition.
There was a guy on here a while ago that was selling a baby russian box. I wonder if he still has it. This gun would look great in that box.

Thank you, Mr. Pace40. That means that possibly, just possibly the pearl grips on my wife's old 1st model New Departure could be original. We will find out when Roy's letter arrives.

S&W started putting medalions in their pearl grips in 1894. Guns shipped earlier may letter with pearl grips, but they would be plain pearl - no medallions. Medalion pearls on earlier guns is not correct - it just means someone put the medallion pearls on the gun at a later time, or they put the medalions in the original pearl grips, at a later time. Medalion pearls would not be correct for a Baby Russian or a .38 SA, 2nd Model. Ed.

Thank you all for your posts, I have a "Baby Russian" 5 shot .38 S&W nickel plated with 99% of the finish remaining except at the muzzle which is rusty looking (have not removed it) with serial number #98 on butt and back of cylinder with black grips with S&W logo at the top curve of grip and the spur trigger, was probably fired with black powder rounds and never cleaned properly but I am going to leave it as is. I have other S&W pistols in same caliber which I shoot with .38S&W rounds. I am a reloader and will take some empty cases and use a black powder substitute and fire same with a 148 grain HB bullet same as I use in the others I own.

Nice find. The Pearl stocks may be factory and are the correct style for your gun, however they are from another gun with the serial number 11329. Ed.

This gun is not a Baby Russian. It is a S&W .38 SA second model.
Only the first model can be called "Baby Bussian" because of its resemblance to the .44 caliber S&W n° 3 Russian Model, especially with its long cylinder pin housing running under the barrel.
This housing does not exist anymore on the second model and thus does not resemble anymore to the .44 model.
