Default NEWBY NEEDS HELP

I am looking for help to identify a gun I have received. It is A smith & Wesson 22 serial # 26166. It belonged to my great grandfather who was a lawman in New Mexico. He died in 1944 and we have pictures of him with the gun several years before that. I have posted photos of the gun and would love any info I could get regarding this. Any help would be appreciated.

Default 22?

Looks like a .44 2nd Model Hand Ejector, built from 1915-1940.
Does it have a screw in front of trigger, going into frame?

Yours dates from 1926. It is a second model hand ejector in .44 Special. Putting a value on something just from a photo is not precise, but in its apparent condition, it would probably sell in the $400-500 range, but that's just a ballpark number.

The gun does have a screw in front of the trigger on the right side. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I think DWalt's a little low on value, but right about year of manufacture. These early Hand Ejectors are called 5 screw and are some of the best Smiths ever made. If you remove the pearl grips...carefully, look to see if they are numbered to the gun. If so it is worth even more with factory pearls. Probably they were added later, but they look good and are always worth a premium.
