Old Smith Revolver....Value?
I recently acquired old Smith revolver ....can some of experts in old Smith's take a look? Any help greatly appreciated!
I'm a new collector but I think this is an old S&W Russian, probably originally chambered in the .44 Russian that was sleeved to shoot .38's....

ersiii, that has to be either a Second Model American or First Model Russian because of the notched hammer and a couple of other features. I believe the only difference was the chambered round -- .44 American or .44 Russian -- and that distinction has been eradicated by the sleeving. Maybe the serial number would give a hint as to what it was originally. I'm not very well informed on these big top-breaks.
The gun has been aggressively buffed before being renickeled; it may even have been nickeled a couple of times. The ratchet looks pretty worn. Interesting gun. Previous owners kept it alive for longer than others might have.

That seems to be a Spanish copy of a Smith & Wesson top-break revolver. It was produced by Hermanos Orbea of Eibar, Spain. HO did not follow the S&W design exactly, but made guns that very much resembled S&W models.
NO, I was wrong. See further post below.

S&W No. 3 American
Did a little digging....gun looks to be the No. 3 American, made between 1870-1874. Most were made in .44 S&W or .44 Russian but some were made in 38-44.
Markings on topstrap are as follows:
SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS.U.S.A.PAT.JULY 10.60.JAN 17.FEB. 17.JULY 11.65&AUG 24.69
ONLY OTHER MARKINGS ARE ON FACE OF CYLINDER AND UNDERSIDE OF RELEASE...BOTH SAY 5 3 7 OR 5 3 ^
SERIAL # ON BOTTOM OF BUTT IS 27348

David, I'n not so sure about this. I think it's actually a cut down and refinished S&W. Someone has replaced the grips with spanish grips. MOP or some kind of imitation, but they look like real MOP. Note how the grips don't quite fit the frame. Also note the S&W seal on the side of the gun in the third photo.

Good points. I read the S&W logo differently when I first looked at the photo, but now I see what you mean.
After the lengthier study that I should have given to the photo before, this now looks to me like a .38 Double Action, Fourth Model. The serial number is consistent with that identification.
Posadas, my apologies for getting it wrong in the first place.

hi all i have a s+w old handgun, i have taken to a gun shop an they seem to believe that it is a model 1 russian but from what i have seen or been able to look up it doesnt have russian model at the end of the writing on top of the barrel. ( smith + wesson springfield, mass usa. pat. july10 60 jan 17 feb 17 july 11 60 aug 24 69 ) and on the bottom of hand grip the number is 4063. the gun itself is in very good condition. if there is anyone who could give me an idea where i could take it to have it appraised i would be most grateful. i live in the maryland area. if there is someone who could help i would gladly give my email so we could talk directly. and i would be more then happy to take an send pictures. the guys at the gun shop i took it too could only guess at the value of the gun and all they said while looking at it was (this is really a cool piece). so thank you in advance for any help.
