Nightstand find
A customer of my auto repair shop came in today with a 32 DA 4th model. He found it in his late grandmothers nightstand when they where cleaning out the house to sell it. It apears to be very tight and in very good shape. It was inside a beaded flowered purse with a silk lining. the only real blemish is a damaged sideplate screw and the hammer will not hold in SA. The grips show no wear at all.
The serial # is 129932. Any idea as to DOB? He gave me the gun and I'd like to know if there is a gunsmith out there that could repair the SA operation for me.

It is probably from the early 1890s, but someone here probably has a better guess than that and may know a gunsmith who can work on it also. Hope this is helpful.

Nice looking gun. You might want to contact Dave Chicoine to see about repairing the gun. oldwestgunsmith.com

Based on the serial number, I would date it between 1887 and 1889.
Nice gun!

No, It was empty. He didn't find any ammo in the house.

My Grandma kept her pistol in the bedstand, right beside her bible.
And she kept it loaded. All the time. Kind of useless, if not.
That's just the kind of gal she was.
Man, she had some stories.

update
I was able to remove the side plate today. It's amazing what you can do with a little Kroil, a properly fitting magtip from Brownell's, and an impact screwdriver. The slot in the sideplate nut was quite stripped. The inside was clean and showed very little wear. The leading edge of the sear appears to be rounded. I think it's time for a real gunsmith to deal with the sear.
I was pleased to see the serial # litely penciled on the inside of the right grip. The numbers on the butt, cyl., and barrel latch all match.

The rear sear is too worn to hold in SA. I E-Mailed Dave Chicoine and he said it was a common problem with DA topbreaks. I'm going to mail it to him on tuesday so he can fix it for me.
