Default grips/stocks for .32 Safety Hammerless/ND

Been looking for a set of pearls for 'the Squeeze'. Finally located a pair but all the guy knows is that they were on a S&W top break .32. I'm satisfied they were on a New Departure from his description. But I'll have to make a long drive just to try them on and no doubt will spend all day Sat. on the road. I was hoping to get an idea of what my chances were that they will fit. So my question is; are all grips/stocks pretty much interchangeable on the S&W ND .32 ?

BTW thanks for all the great info posted here. I had planned to restore my old boat when I retire but now think I'll spend the $$ on old Smiths. Ain't they great !?!

Depends on how picky you are. All grips, whether hard rubber , wood, pearl or ivory were individually fitted to each gun, so grips from another gun of the same model may not be a perfect fit. If you can live with a small difference, and the pearls are truly from a .32 Hammerless, they will probably fit on the your gun, if the stud on the bottom of the grip frame aligns perfectly with the hole in the grip panels. If not, don't force it, the grips will break. If it does align OK, be very carefull how tight you make the grip screw. Pearl does not take stress very well. Good Luck, Ed

The grips on S&W top break 32s are not interchangable. The 32 Double Action grips are considerably smaller than the 32 Safety Hammerless grips and will not fit on a Safety Hammerless. There were about 400000 32 DAs and about 240000 Safety Hammerless. So you are taking a chance buying them sight unseen. I will say that I have seen more Safety Hammerless grips for sale over the years than 32 DA.
If you stand the 32 DA grips on their base they measure 2 1/4 inches high. The 32 Safety Hammerless grips measured the same way are 2 3/8 inches high. I hope that helps.

Thanks Ed & Mark for some great info and advice. Those measurements should determine for sure whether they are for a Safety Hammerless. Supposing they are and the grip frame stud doesn't align with the hole in the panels. Do you think the holes could be filled with epoxy, bondo, or similar and then new holes drilled to align them?

ncreb, Yes, that can be done. Epoxy usually works best. Good Luck, Ed. (PS: I just measured a couple of my .32 Safetys and grips are 2 1/2 in high at the highest point. They are 2 3/8th at the top center of the logo circle, but the back "horn" is 1/8th in. higher. ) (PPS: ncreb, Pls. see PM. )
