Default Just acquired a 1 1/2

Hello all!

I just picked up a 1 1/2, my first break action, antique firearm! It's a neat little piece, but needs some love.

See the pics below- I think someone tried to make a new main spring for the thing and buggered up the frame in the process- there's file marks on the left of the frame! Anyone have a factory spring they want to sell? I also need the tension screw for the spring.

On the action- it seems there's plenty of wear in the ejector nubs, if you will, that turn the cylinder. The lock up is okay, with no axial play, but some radial play- about .015" in the circumference of the cylinder. Same ham fisted gunsmith that made the spring also buggered the screws for the side plate pretty badly- any ideas how to get them off, and if I can find replacements?

As far as the suitability of this as a firearm- I'm thinking if I can get the proper spring and tension screw in there, it'll work- when I place a blade between the frame and main spring and add tension on the spring, the action cycles as it should- the only problem is that the trigger most of the time doesn't catch the hammer and it just slams back home when released. Sometimes, is the tension on the spring is just right, it works okay. Does this sound like it'd be remedied with a spring and screw, or do you think the sear is too worn to catch the hammer properly?

Final question- I know they made 97,000 of these- is there any market among collectors for grips? I make custom pistol grips and am thinking about working up some for this, if there's any market for them. I work mainly in Cocobolo and Walnut.

Thanks everyone!

-Michael

Michael, welcome to the Forum. Sounds like you have picked up a project gun! Parts for these type situations usually come from a junker gun picked up cheap at a gunshow. Or try Poppert'sgun parts.com They have many old S&W parts. I don't think there's a large market for grips for these gun, however the hard rubber variety can be repaired. Ed.
