Default Model 1, 3rd Issue for $2000???

There are certainly more experienced members out there than me, and hoping they might comment on whether or not to confront a seller who is grossly misrepresenting a Smith & Wesson Model 1 - 3rd issue on Gunsamerica. Seller claims the sn is 1354 with a fluted cylinder, octagon barrel and birds head grips.

It just makes me angry that sellers are out there trying to fool the novice collector.

Oh ya - of course seller also claims revolver is in excellent condition.

Exactly how is the seller "grossly misrepresenting" the revolver?

I'm not all that knowledgeable about 22 caliber S&W revolvers, but it does appear to be what he says it is, a Number 1 Third Issue (but I don't know about it being full silver plated or not).

As to the price, he's entitled to ask any price he wants. Potential buyers than have the right to pay that price, make an offer, or pass on the gun. At least the seller is man enough to state his price up front instead of hiding behind a stupid reserve auction.

More photos would certainly help.

As to your contacting him, what exactly would you say?

The description is full of misrepresentations. The seller states a rare and almost impossible to find Smith. They made 131,000 of the guns pictured.

Second, the seller states that the tip-up is a Model No. 1 First Issue Tip-Up Third Type ( a rare gun indeed), but the photos are of a Model 1, 3rd Issue.

Seller also states the revolver has hexagon barrel and fluted cylinder, which does not happen on any Model 1 ever made. These are only the major issues with this listing.

Not only does the seller basically lie about the gun, but then places the statement that there can be no refunds or exchanges for any reason!!

Here several, none worth over $500 other than the engraved one.

No letter on any of them.

Very nice grouping. Does the last Model 1 letter as full silver plate?

My guess would be that the seller is confused and/or uneducated about S&W model nomenclature (and maybe guns in general?). I've been collecting for 40 years, but have just recently got interested in antique S&W's and I must say that the factory and collector terminology is confusing to say the least (such as in this case of "models", "issues", and "types").

Did you notice that his other No. 1 Tip-up has the exact same opening sentence in the description as this one and the same serial number? He might have mixed up his two auctions.

While he may have misdescribed it as to model/issue/type, he did accurately state the years of production and the total number made, and he provided an adequate photo for visual identification to anyone who cares to take 30 seconds to research No. 1 S&W's.

I agree his prices are crazy (the other No. 1 is $8,500!!), and he uses puffery in his description of being "rare" etc., but I don't see that as being a crime.

Other than being very confused with his descriptions. He does have a decent No.1, 1st Issue, 3rd type listed in another ad but the $8000 asking price is way out of line as it is nowhere near the condition claimed. Same with a 5 inch No. 2 Army.
As for the No.1 3rd Issue under discussion, that hammer and trigger look just a little to "silvery" for my taste. (I'm smelling a refinish) Unfortunately the disclosure of "No Returns for any reason" is enough to queer it for me at any price.

This gun has been listed on GB a long time. I sent Lynne an email identifying the gun months ago. Never got a response. Actually, this is a common practice on eBay too. They list with a silly price for 30 days. When the listing expires, they just relist it for another 30 days. Don't forget, if these folks catch a fish the internet auction house gets a huge cut of the catch.

All Smith & Wesson Revolvers have the stamp on the side, serial # on the handle, and year made on the barrel. They didn't make Silver in those years. It was a steel blue coloring.

Starangel1, Correction: All S&W revolvers do not have a "stamp" on the side, Nor a serial number on the "handle" ( I think you mean the butt, right?) and the only dates on the barrel is the patent date(s), not when the gun was made. Finally, most Model 1s have silver plated frames for the 1st & 2nd issues. 3rd issue frames came nickel or blue.

So this thread is from Oct 2011, but...

AFAIK, the fluted cylinder started with the 1st model 3rd issue, BUT the serial numbers start above 60XXX somewhere. An SN of 1354 should have an unfluted cylinder. I suppose most people in this thread recognize that.

Earlier guns such as these did not have the "S&W" monogram. In fact, many many S&Ws did not have that. Also, no S&Ws to my knowledge have a factory stamp with year made on the barrel. As opoefc said, they did have a full factory silver plate option. Instead of "steel blue coloring" aka blued finish (?) which IIRC only started on the 1st model 3rd issue, you could have gotten half plate and this normal on the 1st model 1st issue and the 1st model second issue. The 1st / 3rds were available full nickel, full blue, or half plate (rare).
