Assuming you're speaking of a revolver rather than a single shot, you'll have to hope for a reply from others. I have only one (revolver), a 6" Target #22530, which was "made" and shipped June 7, 1910. It was "made" by the Service Department at that time, who'd been asked to convert a standard gun from inventory to a target model to fill a special order.

If you're speaking of a single shot, then I'd simply be surprised to hear of a number that low---4987 being the lowest shown----but not necessarily the lowest known. And if a single shot, my best guess would be 1893----sometime.

It is a revolver.
Chances are made in 1891?
Thanks for all replies

Certainly a chance. That said, it was not uncommon (especially with a then new model) to deliberately produce guns in a higher serial range early on (having not yet produced any/many in lower ranges) simply to befuddle their competitors.

Given our 20/20 hindsight, we can consider the fact some 26,000 some odd revolvers were produced in 20 years--then do some 2nd/3rd grade arithmetic, and come up with numbers which suggest some things and prove no things. Some refer to such as fun for the feeble minded. Fortunately, we who are fond of S&W facts and figures may order a historical letter which will tell us when any given item was shipped. Given that tid-bit, we may then engage in speculation as to when it might have been made----and there are few who are equipped to argue our conclusions.
