Default 7 shot top break need help with serial

This is my first post so be gentle! I have a top break 7 shot with #27108 on the metal band on the bottom of the handle. Is this the serial number? There are faint markings on the cylinder I can only make out July and Dec 18 and patent but cannot read the rest of it. On the top of barrel is Smith & Wesson, Springfield,Mass. Wood grips.
I have pictures if I can figure out how to add them.

I think what you have there is actually a "tip-up" not a top break. S&W never made a 7 shot topbreak. I'm guessing you have one of the 1st model .22s. If you can post some pics we can tell you exactly what you have there.

Edit: Judging by the serial number it would be a Model 1 second issue made sometime between 1860-1868

Welcome to the forum. Collectors distinguish "tip-up" and "tob-break" revolvers among S&Ws. In the former, the barrel swings up so the cylinder can be removed and loaded. In the latter, the barrel bends down, carrying the cylinder, and the cylinder can be loaded while still on the gun.

I think yours is probably a tip-up rather than a top-break, though the top hinge may make that a little hard to understand. It is probably a Model 1 from the 1860s.

Pics would be a big help. On the page where you compose a post to the forum, look down below the composition box for a button that says "Manage Attachments." Using that you can select files from your computer, and then when you post your message the images come along with it. (Or should.)

Thanks for the fast responses. I had no idea it was that old. Can anyone direct me to someone to get an idea of what would be a reasonable asking price if someone would be interested in buying it. My deceased brother gave it to me but it has no family tie that I am aware of.

Actually, the serial number indicates your S&W was shipped in late 1862 or early 1863, so Civil War era. Actually, many soldiers did carry this revolver in the Civil War as a private purchase back-up. Seems pretty small, but it did offer 7 shots and quick reloading. Might have been marginally acceptable in close quarters combat.
