Default My 1st Top Break: 38 New Departure

I was at G Mountain today.. the last place I would think of buying a gun...I was with my wife looking at gun safes, buying some targets and generally wandering. I wandered over to the used gun section where they had 2 Smith's. A beat up Model 36 from the mid 70's and this lemon Squeezer. A .38 New Departure 4th Model. It is in excellent condition. The grips # to the gun as do the other S/N components. I first thought it was a refinish but I can find no signs that S&W did one (no markings on the grip area) and the blue is continuous all the way to where it has the most wear. The butt plate has some freckling. The front strap is quite worn of blue as well as the muzzle. Here are the pics I took today. It came in a 1920's "patent Box" for a 38 M&P square butt 4". That should be worth $50-$75 itself. I really like the "little guy" I need to get some .38 S&W ammo and take her out for a spin

I have #174XXX which seems a twin to yours. The sideplate is discolored in the same way, I wonder if this is common.
