I just purchased my first collector gun. A 2nd issue S&W mod 1. Serial # 23995. Any ideas on when this gun was manufactored?
The gun is in fair to good condition, everything still works and locks up like it should. 50% of the silver remaining, light exterior rust on the barrel, the cylinder and bore are clean with distinct lans and grooves. Any thoughts on estimated value? (more of interest than wanting to sell)

Reason: add pictures
Your Model One probably shipped in the middle of the Civil War, so could have been carried during the war. Model 1s in good condition are probably valued around $200 to $300, but pictures would help to determine exact condition. S&W manufactured over 100,000 Second Issue guns from 1860 to 1868.
You Model 1 is in what I would estimate as very good condition. The bluing on the barrel has turned mostly plum, but the silver plate looks good and there is no pitting ahead of the cylinder. Either the owner took very good care or it was not shot much.
These Model 1s do not command a great deal of money unless they are in excellent condition, but I would add another $100 to my estimate given you have a nice unmolested Smith.
