This pistol has been passed down in our family, and it seems to be pretty old. Does anyone know when the Model 2 Type 5's were made? The serial number is in the 48,000 range. Also, typically how much would this type of gun sell for? I couldn't find any other information online. Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Congratulations on your family heirloom. If your SN is below 48475, it was made during the Civil War that was the cutoff number for revolvers made in 1865. So, that should date it for you. To be more precise, you need a letter of authenticity from the S&W Historian. Can't give you a value.

Welcome - you have a Model 2 that probably have been shipped right at or after the end of the Civil War, so chances are it did not see any action, since the war ended in April 1865. Several guns in the SWCA Database between 40,000 to 45,000 sn range shipped after June that year.

Looking at your picture, there appears to be little original finish left, right stock is banged up, and it looks like the tip of the hammer is missing. The thumbpiece should have a rather substantial curve at the tip and yours is missing. Lastly, you can not shoot these guns anymore, since no ammunition has been manufactured in the last 20 years.

All this together would put your revolver in a "Good" condition, which could be estimated below $500. These guns do come up for auction and the prices seem to be all over the place, so it is hard to give an accurate estimate.

Ron - two questions. First, I have sent in a couple of my Model 2s, but now forgot which ones I sent. Is there any way to check, since I have additional ones to submit?

Second, any idea when your book might be published? Many are waiting patiently, but with great anticipation!

I file the data base numerically thus I would have to go back thru the hard copy to be able to come up with your survey. as for the book coauthoring the book with Roy Jenks I have turned all on my information over to him. He is quite busy doing several othe. projects. Sorry I do not have an answer to your question. Thanks for your support

John 22655 not in Data Base I have 22674 with ivory grips in that serial range we have five number 2 s with ivories, two with carved ivories.
