I just purchased this gun at auction and the auction company did not seem to know much about it. I was hoping someone could help me out with some information.
1. What is the estimated year of manufactor
2. Estimated Value
3. Where I can get replacement grips, preferably authentic

Here is what I know about the gun. The top of the barrel is marked "Smith&Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A. PAT D Jan 17&24.65 July 11.65 Aug 24.69 July 25.71 Dec 9.79 May 11&25 1880"

It has a 3.25" barrel and is a 5 shot.

The serial number is located on the frame of the handle and is 81XXX. I did not see any other markings on the gun. I believe it is a .38 but I am not sure. I have attached some pictures. Any information would be a great help.

Welcome to the Forum. You have a 38 Double Action Second Model shipped from the factory in the mid-1880s. Condition looks well worn and there is the broken hard rubber stock. This is an antique, but with the condition I would venture an estimate of $200 if working. Ammunition is called 38 S&W.

Original hard rubber stocks come up for sale on ebay, Gunbroker, etc. Does the right stock have a serial number? Any replacement will not be original to your revolver, but would improve the appearance and shooting. Vintage Gun Grips also reproduction stocks for the 38 DA, so at least one way or the other, you should be able to find good replacements.
