I have had this old S&W put away since my grandfather gave it to me. It is marked with 18423 on the bottom of the grip, as well as on the inner cylinder wall and barrel break. The top of the barrel is marked smith and wesson springfield mass usa patd jan 17& 24 65(?) july 11 65 aug 69 july 25 71 dec 2 79 may 11&25 1880. A .38 cartridges fall right through and a .44 is a touch too large. Any ideas on year, model,caliber , or any other info is greatly appreciated.

I can't seem to load a second picture. The weapon is a top break with an auto eject.

Welcome to the Forum. If a 38 Special drops through the cylinder chamber, you most likely have a 44 Double Action. I don't know what type of 44 cartridge you tried, but would guess that you have a 44 Russian caliber. Your revolver would have left the factory in the mid-1880s and they were available in 4", 5", 6", and 6 1/2" barrel lengths.

You're probably trying a .44 Magnum, or 44-40 cartridge in the chamber. Both are too large for your gun. Try a .S&W 44 Russian and you will find it fits just right! You have a S&W Model 3, .44 Double Action. These guns are all classed a antiques by the ATF as the frames were made before 1898, although due to slow sales many were not shipped from S&W until up to WW1 era. Ed.
