Default Different brand barrel?

Is it possible to use a different brand barrel (iver Johnson) on a .38 s&w revolver? Same caliber and seems to fit. I got a .38 top break revolver double action 3rd model. Will it shoot safely?

In my mind it would be very unlikely that the barrel would align with the cylinder, even if the hinge fits. I would be very careful when it comes to fitting non-S&W parts. Besides, it would also be unlikely that the extractor mechanism and the barrel latch would function properly.

Is it possible? Yes & no. Marlin double action revolvers were made using S&W forging dies, so it may be possible to get correct alignment of the barrel & cylinder if you put a Marlin DA barrel on a S&W frame, and vice versa. That's kind of the long way around the barn, however. If you have a .38 DA S&W, with no barrel, you are much more likely to find a spare S&W barrel, than a Marlin. Other DA top break barrels by various makers wont fit. Ed.

It's really hard to say. If everything seems to go together without binding, if all of the chambers align completely with the boreline of the barrel, and it locks up, it might work. But even then I don't think I would want to hold it in my hand while firing.
