Welcome to the forum. S&W used several different serial number sequences for different models, so the number by itself is no help.

Does the gun break open from the top for loading and ejecting, or does the cylinder swing out to the side?

Does this gun have an exposed hammer?

If so, does the gun have trigger guard?

Are there patent dates on the barrel? If so, what is the last one?

How many chambers in the cylinder?

Is there a letter in front of the serial number (V, for example, but possibly other letters as well).

If you have a photobucket (or some other image hosting) account, you can upload your images there and then iclude links to those photos in your posts here.

Welcome to the Forum.
Yes, a picture will help a lot, but I'll take a stab at it.
I will assume it has fixed sights, which would make it a Military and Police model. The Catalog says # 241,704 was made in 1915 and # 700,000 in 1942, so it's kind of hard to nail down. I will also assume there are no letters in that number, so it's somewhere in that range.
What is the barrel length, measured from muzzle to front of cylinder?
This revolver was one of the most popular models S&W made, and it was called the M10 in 1957.

What you have could be many things. A few good pictures would tell the tale, along with a recitation of all markings stamped on it. Without pictures, you must be much more precise in your description.
