Welcome! From the size of the cylinder ("drum") and the type of latch to open the action, I believe you have a .38 Safety Hammerless or "lemon squeezer". The serial number puts it as shipped in about 1898. Hope this is helpful.

I think that is a .38 caliber revolver rather than .32, and yes, the .32 caliber cylinders are quite a bit smaller than the one in your gun.

When S&W sold this model in the 1890s, they called it the .38 Safety Hammerless, Third Model. The "lemon squeezer" nickname refers to the grip safety bar, which needed to be compressed for the gun to fire. Any S&W with that feature can be referred to as a lemon squeezer.

If you look at the side of the barrel, you should see the stamp .38 S&W CTG. That stands for .38 S&W cartridge, which is what the gun fired. That is NOT the .38 Special cartridge, which was introduced around this time but was never an option in these compact top-break revolvers. If a gunsmith gives you clearance to shoot that gun, the ammo is still available (though not everywhere, and it can be expensive).

There is no stamp on the side of the barrel and from what i read should not be.

Here's the whole gun.

This is a fourth model that was shipped in 1908. It's about 10 years younger than yours.
