I have a nice blued 3rd model 38 safety hammerless that is stamped USX on the right side just below the S&W trademark. The serial number is also stamped above the trademark in the right side. This Smith is in very good shape and carries about 90% of the original finish. This revolver came from the family of the U.S. Express Co. agent that was serving from approx 1907 - 1912, here in Oklahoma. I hope someone can tell us the date of manufacture-purchase and approx value. Thanks Henri
We can give you guesses from the information you provided, but a partial serial number from the bottom of the grip frame (like 123xxx) and photos would help for more exact estimates. Here is a post for ID and other information:
The serial number marks it as a fourth model .38 Safety Hammerless. These were manufactured from 1898-1907 with yours about 80% of the way through the serial numbers. I have one with a serial number of 188xxx that was shipped from S&W in Sept 1906 so yours was probably shipped after that although S&W didn't necessarily ship them in serial number order.
The value is hard to determine without photos. If the bluing is good it will command a slightly higher price because nickel finishes were more popular. About $400 to $600 in the condition you describe. If in pristine condition it will get over $1000. Hope this helps.
