Talking 1880 S&W .38 Short Pics.

Here is what a S&W .38 short five shot i got of a fellow gun enthusiast. He call is a DA model 2? I know very little about this pistol out side of the rolling. This was hie grandfathers gun and The grip were long ago damaged and his grandpa made the grips from real mother of peal. They are not the best fit but remarkable well hand crafted. I thought I would replace they with an original set. But I am unsure what size or type will work. I thinking some one else may have a better home for her. She has great action and works well as I fired the only 5 rounds the fellow had with it. He stated that the rounds had been in the pistol for over 30 years. It fire and shot wonderfully. Can anyone give me around about fair market selling price. Thanks for looking.

It's a .38 Double Action Second Model, shipped between 1880 and '84. It likely had black hard rubber stocks from the factory - if you do a search for this model here (Search Site/Google function) you'll see how they look.

I recall that MOP was very nasty stuff with which to work, and something along the lines of having to shape them in a water bath because of the inhalation hazard.

What you are showing is a 38 Double Action, Second Model. These were manufactured from 1880 to 1884, with serial numbers from 4001 to 119,000. First, 1880 is probably the last patent date on the barrel, but has nothing to do with the model designation, or year unless it has a low number. The serial number will help with narrowing down the year it left the factory. Second, there is no such thing as 38 S&W Short. It is simply a 38 S&W. Well used, but not abused DA that should continue to perform well at the range.

ebay often has original black hard rubber stocks for the 38 DA, so you should be able to find a set at a reasonable price.

Default Great info

Thanks so much for the info. So what other S&W grips will fit? What frame style is it considered? I have seen a lot of S&W grips on Ebay but unsure what to purchase. What's the fair market value of this pistol? Or How can I reference the value?

Any 38 DA stocks will fit, but the round butt I frame stocks are also the same size. The 38 SA and Model 1891 revolvers also have the same butt frame size. Your serial number would place the 38 close to the last year of its manufacture.

Lastly, you are most likely looking at $250 to $350 in value.
