Revolving Rifle serial number 1
Several members have asked me to post pictures of Revolving Rifle serial number 1. I had today off, so, down to the bank and took it home for cleaning and pictures. A little background first. It letters as follows," shipped from our factory on no date listed, and delivered to J. H. Wesson Smith & Wesson office. The records only indicate that this rifle had a 16 inch barrel and blue finish. There is no charge off on the records recording the sale to Joe Wesson. I am the fifth owner.
The widow of the second owner was seen using it to hold open her screen door on hot summer nights. So would this be Smith & Wesson's first SCREEN (door) SAVER?
Shortly after I bought it, I took it to the SWCA annual meeting in Knoxville where the theme was Revolving Rifles. One of the longtime members asked if he could dismantle it, because he had a couple of question about the internal parts. Everything was normal inside, except for the absence of the pawl. The accessories with it were all bought after I got it. The front sight and the ammo box with the rifle pictured on it was given to me the gentleman I bought it from. His name was Bob Skinner. Unfortunately, Bob died of cancer shortly after I bought it. The screw that goes in the stock along with the rear sight tightening tool are recent reproductions made by Charlie Duffy. The rear sight is NOS.
I got from another SWCA member. So, here it is. It ain't pretty, but, it is what it is

Don,
That is *(%$ cool, thank you for sharing.
It's no wonder I gravitate towards you at the annuals.
You are as rare as a number 1 on any gun.
Dave

Owning, cleaning, and tinkering with that beauty must surely be ecstasy. Just looking at a picture of it on a computer screen is a thrill in itself. Amazing!

I'll tell you a quick story about #1. When Louise and I first saw it, it was in the basement of the the previous owners home. It was in the summer of 1994, I don't remember the month, hot, sweaty and high humidity. Our shoes were sticking to the concrete. He brings out a nickel Revolving Rifle, IN THE CASE! It was beautiful, almost as nice as the blued one, IN THE CASE! Then he shows me two other blued Revolving Rifles maybe 80 to 90%. After he shows us those, he says, "Now let me show you may favorite. That was when we first saw NUMBER ONE. I looked at it and noticed it had the short tang. At the same time I saw 1 one the butt. He could tell by the look in my eyes that I wanted it. He told me stories about all the people that make outrageous offers for it.
I bought a S & W single shot from him and left. When we got in our car to go home, it was pretty quite. Suddenly Louise said, "We have to own that rifle". As you can see, we did in fact buy it almost two years later.
Bob
I believe all advertising for the Revolving Rifle used number one. All advertising having a Revolving Rifle pictured, shows the short tang.
This gun is going to help fund my future home near Gettysburg PA.
So, maybe you can buy it and you can donate it.
It would make a great display.
