38
38 S&W.. Not 38short or 38Special..Looks pretty rough... You might want a real gunsmith look at it before you attempt to fire it.. Good Luck..

It is a .38 Double Action 4th Model as made 1899-1909.
I can't tie it down any closer than that.

There really isn't any 38 Short, it is 38 S&W, which is shorter than a 38 Special, but is also larger around. This gun is a 38 S&W which is still mfg. but somewhat pricy when it can be found.

The poster's gun is .38 S&W caliber, as said above, however there are several .38 cartridges that are shorter than the .38S&W. such as the .38 Webley, .38 Eley. , .38 Short Colt and some .38 Colt New Police loadings and .38 Merwins. Ed.

Not to confuse things, but there is a .38 Short Colt cartridge. It is very similar in appearance to the .38 S&W cartridge, but has a slightly smaller diameter. In a pinch, .38 Short Colt ammunition can be fired in a .38 S&W-chambered revolver without ill effect. But .38 Short Colt ammunition is just as difficult to find as .38 S&W ammunition, so there is no benefit to using it. .38 S&W Special ammunition CANNOT be used in your top break.
Your SN definitely puts it as having been manufactured later than 1898 (probably early 1900s), so it is NOT legally an antique under BATFE regulations. It is considered a modern revolver and subject to the same regulations.

Cruise small gun shows and gun club swap meets for older ammunition. Much of this older ammunition, reloading dies, primers etc. is being brought to market by a generation of older shooters that are thinning out their inventory. I have recently bought boxes of primers for $10 a 1000 at a gun club swap meet as well as full boxes of 38 S&W ammo.
