Default Help on Stocks

Pictured are a set of S&W 38 and 32 DA stocks...Can you help me identify the big ones? There is no SN on the stocks and the grid squares are 1/4" squares...They do not fit any of my older M&P's or any top break I own... Thanks in advance

It's tough to compare but I'd guess it is a .44 Double Action size. It doesn't look quite correct for the New Model #3 Single Action frame. It also appears to be a reproduction piece.

They are also larger than my K frame stocks from my M&P's....How can you tell if repros?

The lack of a screw escutcheon is a big clue- they're very difficult, if not impossible, to remove from original stocks of that vintage without damaging the grips. Repros come without these or with brass parts that are easily distinguished from original hardware.

Once you've handled enough originals and repros, you can also tell the difference by the texture of the plastic, among other things.

blanda1,

At first glance...Like Mike (mmaher94087)...I also thought them to be 44DA Stocks, but after looking a bit closer I noticed a couple things indicating they are in fact for a NM#3!!

First indication they fit a NM#3 is the Lower Point of the Center Diamond on Double-Actions comes much closer to the Spear-Point coming up from the Butt than do the NM#3 Stocks (See Attached Photo)!!

Another indication as to them being NM#3 Stocks..Other than having a Large Dia. Logo Circle...Is 44DA Stocks have a Small Diamond on either side of the Intertwined S&W Logo whereas NM#3 Stocks do not!! There are quite a few others as well, but generally the ones I mentioned are a bit more recognizable if you have nothing to compare!!

So the indicators above...Along with the fact of you mentioning they don't come close to fitting an Early K-Frame M&P...Is also reason to believe they're for a NM#3 given 44DA Stocks can fitted to an Early Rd. Butt M&P if you relocate the Stock Locating Pin Hole a tad!!

I do agree...Along with the others...They're likely Reproductions!!

blanda1,
It appears to fit a New Model No. 3 S.A.
Pictured is the ones off my well used New Model No. 3, serial no. 26710 with right grip numbered to the frame. Photo of the left grip is also on 1/4" square grid paper. Same number of squares, 3-1/4 inch.
