Help on a .38 Safety breakdown
So, I am trying to get my .38 Safety Hammerless Model 2 all cleaned up and functioning. My problem is the cylinder hook on top of the barrel. I was able to drift out the pin, and I've soaked it in Ed's Red overnight, and it STILL will not budge!!! I try to rock it back and forth but all I've done is made it so the pin hole doesn't align anymore. It seems like the back part that actually catches the cylinder is stuck in there? Any advice?? I've included a diagram so you understand what part I'm referring to. It is part #230. I'm thinking the spring is shot or all gummed up.

I had one years ago. Gunsmith found a defective spring. He replaced it.

What was the TV series quote; "Patience Grasshopper"? Let it soak for a week - minimum. That thing has been there for about 140 years. It will come loose.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! "Kung Fu" with David Carradine!!! Loved the show!! I also find it humorous because a good friend of mine used to say that to people all the time!! Since I have way more time then money, back into the Red it goes!!!!! Thanks for the advice!!!

It may also require some heat. Warm it up with a hair dryer but not over 250 degrees. If it gets too hot, the finish may discolor and the temper may be lost in the springs. Warm it then put it back in the Ed's Red to soak. Repeat occasionally. Expansion, contraction and soaking are your friends; helps to break the bonds created by the crud.

Well, I let the gun sit for 5 days and decided to try getting the catch loose ... it popped right off!!! I let everything soak for another three days and put it together tonight. It may not be the prettiest gal at the dance, but everything seems to work on it now. I just need to run it by my local gunsmith for final ok and then to the range!!!

Glad to know that you got it working. Short of it not being in time or a firing pin stuck in the bushing; you should be good to go. Congratulations.
