32 New Departure
I recently was given a S&W 32Cal New Departure. It came in its original box and is nickel plated and is in very good condition. I was able to purchase some S&W 32 ammunition and the gun fires beautifully. The gun has a four number serial which starts with 58XX. Can anyone help me in determining the 20140828_200721.jpg
20140828_201014.jpgdate of manufacture and approximate worth? Thanks in advance for anyone who may be able to help.

You have a First Model for which manufacture began in early 1888. With the low serial number, I would estimate its birth date to be late 1888 or 1889, depending how fast production ramped up. It seems to be in good shape for such an early model, although not pristine; the lighting of your picture isn't ideal. Approximate worth is hard to pin down, as it depends on what someone is looking for. I have a thing for low serial numbers, if I were looking for one I might go up to $400.

I could see myself pay close to twice that. Provided that the bore is in excellent condition. I know of a dealer that is charging $1500 for early hammerless .32 with a 3.5" barrel and original box.

Yes I agree, worth much more than $400. Its very nice, with a box, and its an antique (early first model). Hard to find like that.

I should also add that i consider the 3" to be way more attractive than the 3.5".

They are very nice little guns, were popular carry and self defense guns for a long time - 1880's till just before WWII. Harder to find them with the box and with a decent finish...the 3" is more desirable, too, as stated. Nice piece.
