Smith and Wesson Top Break ID help
I purchased this today. It is a Smith and Wesson top break revolver chambered in 44 Russian. The only markings I can find on it are the 4 digit serial number on the butt. The serial number starts with 2 . I'm just mainly curious how to find out an exact year of manufacture. Thanks for any help. I can't figure out how to post pics on here with my phone.

There are several possibilities, so no one can help you without better information and pictures. Almost certainly from the late 19th century.

Be sure the pictures show all the stampings and marking clearly, especial on the barrel rib. Measure the barrel from the front face of the cylinder to the muzzle. A 5" barrel on a .44 Russian cal. is uncommon. We are assuming the gun is a top break action . Is it a square butt or round butt? Ed.

It doesn't have any markings left on it except the serial number on the butt. It is a 5" barrel and the cylinder measures 1 7/16" I'll try and get some better pictures when I get home.

Your S&W is a first model .44 Double Action. Post the full serial number and I may be able to tell you when it was made. It appears to have been refinished at some time in the past, as the hammer & trigger guard should be case hardened, not nickel. All .44DAs are classified as Antique by the BATF, regardless of when shipped form the factory. The grips, if original to the gun., will have the serial number on the back side of the right grip. Ed.

Yeah, it was definitely refinished at some point. The guy I got it from said he thought someone chromed it but I think he meant nickel or he may just not know the difference. The serial number from what I can tell is 2063. The first two numbers are kind of faint. I'll take the grips off and look there. Thanks for all the info. What would some of you estimate the value on something like this. Just a rough estimate. Not wanting to sell or anything, just wondering how good or maybe bad I might have done on it. Thank you

cum2jesus, Welcome to the Forum. You are high jacking another's thread. Please post your question as a new posting, and tell us more about your S&W. Is it a hammerless model or is the hammer visible? Ed.

It's an early .44 DA, 1st Model. They began being manufactured in 1881, so it was shipped in 1881 or 1882.

Any idea of value with it having been refinished at some point. Rough guess maybe

I'm no expert, but had a similar one that was replated with the hammer, trigger and trigger guard also nickeled go for $600 on a recent auction.

$600 is exactly the same amount that a similar one sold for a few months ago at a local gun show.

Well if it's worth course to $600, I would be coming out pretty good.
