Default Guess it's my turn to ask QQQ's

I was in an antique shop and couldn't resist, so now I'm looking for all the info you guys can provide. Please see the attached pictures of a model 2 serial #98475. The pictures may not show the blemishes (95%??), bore has a slight amount of something (not cleaned it yet), action is very tight and all the number I've found so far match. Appreciate any and all info possible. Thanks, Bill

Your .38 Single Action, 2nd model, serial number 98475, was manufactured June 18, 1885, as a nickel plated gun with black hard rubber grips. Ed.

It has been refinished, but the engraving may offset that loss. It's a looker, but I'm not the one that can give you a value.

Very nice 38 SA, 2nd Model. I would think it to be #1 factory style engraving, but I have not seen a border done like that one attributed to a factory engraver?? Ed has the information on the gun, but going back that far leaves some room for errors and omissions in the factory records.

The gun, without any engraving could sell for $500+ in the condition as it appears in your photos. If factory engraved, it falls into the Nimschke and Young years that could add significant value if proven factory. If it was engraved after it left the factory, a smaller premium would still be seen.

Another option is that it was returned to the factory for engraving, but there should be a date stamped inside the left stock on the butt frame. Problem with looking for a date stamp is that I have not seen any so stamped guns until around 1910.

These revolvers were made from 1877 to 1891 and 108,255 were made. There are a few engraving "experts" out there, but I am not one of them, so hopefully one will help you out on determining which type of engraving was done on that 38 SA.
