Welcome to the Forum. I assume your revolver is a top-break since it is only 5 shot. With that serial number and being a 5 shot 38, I would guess it is a 38 Double Action, 4th Model revolver??? These revolvers were made from 1905 to 1909. If it is a solid frame revolver, it would have to be a 6 shot with that serial number, so pictures would be very helpful.

If indeed it is a S&W and has a 5-chamber cylinder and is a .38 top break, it nearly has to be a .38 Double Action, fourth model. It would be from post-1898 (probably around 1900), and therefore not a BATFE antique. I suspect that S&W gave you the incorrect date because a .38 Special M&P revolver with that SN could have shipped in 1923 or 1924. I don't believe they understood your description.

Jim, let me try to tie these 2 posts together. It would have been better if you added the picture in a reply to your original post. As said before, it was not made in 1924 as you keep posting, but rather in the turn of the twentieth century.

1924 38

It certainly looks like a 38 Double Action and the information already given you should be accurate.

Your gun is a .38Smith & Wesson caliber Double Action model, made around 1900 era, not a .38 Special Military and Police Model, made in 1924. Your call to the factory was misunderstood and they gave you the info. on the .38 Special model M&P, not the .38 S&W cal. Double Action model. Both guns could have the same 414356 serial number, as they are totally different guns. Ed.

This model was sold from 1880 to 1911; a total of over 554,000 were produced. The 6" barrel was one of the less common lengths. If possible, details about its bore/chamber/mechanical condition and larger and more detailed photos would help with a value estimate.
