It is a S&W First Model American in the 44 American caliber, not 38. It's hard to tell from the pictures but it appears to have a oil vent hole. The barrel seems short for 8 inches, are you sure it was a 8 inch barrel?

The gun in the pictures appears to be a S&W first model American If so the caliber is .44 S&W, and a low serial number would be expected.

I think the previous posters have the ID correct. Based on its length relative to the cylinder, the barrel measures about 5.25". I would guess based on this and the replacement front sight that it has been shortened, which will reduce its value somewhat.
I would also hazard a guess that if this gun is listed for sale somewhere that the seller mixed up its description with that of a .38 Colt D.A. New Army/Navy revolver from the 1889-1903 era.

launchohio, Welcome to the Forum. "Navy Colt 38 long barrel revolver" Somebody is pulling your leg! The gun is a first Model S&W American, as described above. Also, it's a top break action, not a bottom break. Nice example that has some value, but that's not an 8 in. barrel. . Ed.
