Please Help me identify this 44

Fellow smithophiles, need your help again. On two items:
First a relic of a 44 DA frontier. Part(s) missing so Double action does not work ,but it will cock and trigger will drop hammer in single action. Piece is rough. I would love to know what it is and about what a non working one is worth. Markings on top of barrel are pretty clear. Also there are oversize grips on it
making it appear to be a square butt.Serial number is 5024

That is a well used 44 Double Action Frontier, with several modifications. These were made from 1886 to 1913, and over 15,000 were made total. Getting an accurate ship date is almost impossible, since these guns were slow movers and would sit in inventory for a long time before selling. I would only estimate that it would most likely been shipped in the early 1890s.

Value is a tough question, with a rough surface, filed front sight, replaced stocks, removed firing pin, and I think a modified standard rear sight as well. If it is not in working condition, it would probably only be worth whatever parts are left to sell. If sold as is, my guess would be $400.

A .44 DA Frontier Model is in caliber 44-40, and would have a cylinder length of 1 9/16ths inches. If that's what your cylinder measures, then the gun was made on May 29, 1889. If the cylinder is only 1 7/16ths, then the gun is a .44DA Model in .44 Russian caliber, made Feb. 3, 1882, with wood stocks. A factory historical letter will tell you when the gun was shipped. It's current value is minimal as a parts donor, only a few hundred dollars to someone looking for parts. Ed. ( What's the 2nd item ? )
