Smith and Wesson Pistol
Hello I just got an old pistol today and I need some help on identifying it. It a smith and wesson single action pistol. It does not have a caliber or serial number on it all it has is dates. January 17 & 24, 1865; July 11, 1865; August 24, 1869; February 20, 1877; reissue July 25, 1871. These are the dates that are located on it. My questions are what caliber is this and is it ok to fire. Thanks.

Your S&W appears to be a .32 Single Action Model 1 1/2 centerfire. There will be a serial number on the butt, on the back of the cylinder, on the bottom of the barrel latch and on the barrel between the rear "ears." These number should match. If the grips are original to the gun, the back side of the right panel will have the serial number there also. The style of the grips indicate the gun's serial number is over 29,000. The original finish is almost gone from improper care, however it it's in good mechanical condition and the cylinder locks up tight when the gun is cocked, it is probably safe to fire, using .32 S&W centerfire ammo. That kind of revolver is a hoot to shoot. Hard to find ammo.

lakedelevan, someone has had the barrel off the revolver and hasn't aligned the witness marks on the right of the hinge. Pix #2 shows the mark on the hinge pin looking right while the mark on the hinge is pointing straight up. the marks are there so an alignment boss will key into the hinge thus producing a smooth pin that is not 'proud' of the hinge. Carefully remove the screw on the left side and reorient the witness marks and reinstall the screw.
