S&W nickeled revolver
First of all, not my gun. I promised my friend, who does not use his computer a lot...
What are we dealing with here, and year of production?
Is it all original?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum. Great looking Smith & Wesson. That revolver is called a 38 Double Action, 4th Model. It would have been shipped from the factory in 1902, and is classified as a modern firearm by the BATF. I am not an expert on engraving, but it looks like a very early style lower level engraving on a twentieth century gun. The style makes me wonder if it was post-factory, but it s so well done . . . maybe factory??? Factory pearl stocks after 1893 should bear the gold S&W medallion, so stocks could have been added at the distributor or later.
Value depends on the originality of the engraving, so that needs to be addressed by one of out factory engraving experts, who will certainly come along soon.

I'm not comfortable with the way the barrel markings look a little washed out on the upper parts of the lettering. Could be a refinish that was done at the time of a later engraving.

Looks like it also might be the way the light is hitting it.

I think this will need a hands on inspection to answer the many questions raised.

Are the marks just over the trigger assembly underneath the nickel?

It sure looks like it to me! This means that it was nickeled again following pitting, which means that it was renickeled at some time. I would bet on a later engraving (than when factory new) and the lack of crispness with regards to the barrel lettering also suggests a later renickel job.

Attractive gun, however it's been refinished at least once in the past. The engraving style is style No. 2 in the 1890 catalog, or a copy of the S&W coverage engraving offered at the time, (turn of the century ) with a remote possibility that factory engraving was recut and some embellishments added, (punch dots, etc. ) when the gun was replated. Grips are after market. Ed.

That is a very good refinish for an engraved gun with pitting.
Pull the grips and show us pics of the left side of the grip frame.
The engraving is almost certainly Factory, cut by Oscar or Eugene Young.
Probably Oscar.

That engraving looks really nice and crisp. Might be the nickel thinned or wore near where you see the pitting. I've seen some, very similar to this, polished by hand very carefully, the white metal blending with the thinning nickel. Whomever said (above) warrants a "hands on" examination ... I agree but I am taken aback at how nice and crisp the engraving is. Engraving looks good to me.
