32 Safety Hammerless, 1st Mod, info
I recently picked up a .32 Safety Hammerless, 1st Model, 3.00" revolver in nickel with serial number 410XX. I am looking to get an approximate date on when it was shipped. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

That example would have left the factory in the early 1890s, maybe around 1892. At any rate, it would be classified as an antique.

You can get the shipping date via a Factory Historical letter from Roy Jinks, Factory Historian. A link to the application form is on this Forum and on the S&W factory web page. Cost is $50. It will tell you when, where and to whom the gun was shipped and the configuration of the gun at that time. Most of these went to S&W distributors, like M.W. Robinson, NYC. The actual date of manufacture is recorded in the Floor Foreman's daily Production Logs, which are archived at the Springfield History Museum in Springfield, MA. You can go there and look it up. The logs recorded the "made" dates in numerical sequence so it's easy to look up a particular gun by it's serial number. Ed.
