Default Help Identifying

I recently received a revolver that belonged to my great-grandfather. Any information about the revolver would be greatly appreciated.

It is a top-break model chambered for 38 S&W. S/N 333XXX, 3 1/4 inch barrel, fixed sights.

It appears to have been nickel plated at some point.

Welcome! This is a .38 Double Action from the mid- to late 1890 decade. It has been refinished in nickel, as S & W did not finish their hammers and triggers in this way. It was produced from 1880 and was available until 1911, with over 550,000 produced. Hope this is helpful.

With that serial, 333,xxx, it is a .38 Double Action 4th Model made in serial range 322,701 to 539,000 from 1895 to 1909.
The BATF Curio & Relic List shows serial # 380,023 as the starting point for C&R's in this Model, so anything before would be classified as an antique.

Ditto on the refinish......

Thank you both. This is what I wanted to know.

The story goes that my great grandfather carried this while he was a switchman for the railroad in the early 1900s.
