On the butt is the serial number, pls post. It may help a bit.
There may be a small set of initials engraved some where on the gun,
and then and again there may not be. With the gold trigger and MOPs
it could have been a special order. Only a Jinks Letter will tell. Anymore from me is pure speculation. Good hunting. Nice looking little gun.

Appears to be non-factory, but nice, "New York dealer" engraving. Factory engraving pictured in the S&W catalogs of the period, do not show this extensive coverage for engraving. Ed.

Your 38 Safety, 2nd Model was shipped from the factory in 1888. The caliber is 38 S&W if you are looking for ammo.

I like that. If I had that gun, it'd sure be worth fifty bucks to me for a factory letter, just on the offchance I could find out more about it.
Did you friend say where he got it or how long he's had it?
Is that a number on the left side of the sight blade?

No I really do not know anything about the gun to be honest. I haven't found any numbers other than the serial but maybe you caught something I missed

It's just a weird mark on the left side of the sight blade. Looks like a number "9" or maybe a "4". But in reality, it's probably just where the nickel's flaked off like on the other side.

I'll agree with opoefc. Although a very nice revolver, I don't believe it is factory work for several reasons. The most obvious are the blue screws and pins and the not-quite-perfect fit of the pearls. Couple that with the amount of and style of the engraving and I'm leaning to New York style, dealer enhanced work.

I just realized I never updated this post figured I would share what I learned.
The revolver was shipped from the factory on February 4, 1889, and delivered to M. W. Robinson Co., New York City, NY. The engraving and pearl grips were probably completed by Mr. Robinson Company to fill a special order
